John Pomfret Obituary

John David Pomfret, 84, of Wrentham, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024.

He was the beloved husband of the late Judith A. (Hickey) Pomfret. Born in Mansfield on July 20, 1939 to the late George and Margaret (Mayday) Pomfret.

John is survived by four children; Kevin D. Pomfret and his wife Laura Delgado Lopez of Vienna, Virginia; Elizabeth Quinlisk and her husband Timothy of Duxbury; Karen Khung and her husband Brian of Wrentham and Jennifer Lee and her husband Howard of Newton. He leaves behind nine grandchildren: Talene, Kevin, Jr. (KJ), Matthew, Michelle, Conor, Ian, Amanda, Cassandra, and Jessica. John was preceded in death by a brother Mahlon Pomfret and sister Joan Eastman. He is also survived by a brother Robert Pomfret of Florida and a sister Diane Baldini of Mansfield.

John grew up in Mansfield. Jumpin Johnny was the captain of the Mansfield High School basketball team and in 1957 broke the school record for most points in a career. He was an overall athlete and lettered in football and track. John received his Bachelors degree in English from the University of Massachusetts, where he continued his basketball career and participated in the ROTC. He went on to serve as Captain in the United States Air Force.

John was an avid Boston sports fan and could often be heard passionately cheering for the Boston Celtics. He and Judith enjoyed taking day trips throughout New England and loved their trips to England and Wales. John also enjoyed coaching his children in sports and teaching them to ski. He was a voracious reader and he loved collecting, working on crosswords and spending time with friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate at his funeral on Saturday, February 10th at 10:30AM in St. Marys Church, 130 South Street, Wrentham. Burial will follow at Wrentham Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Johns memory can be made to Compassionate Care Hospice at Amedisys Foundation, 3854 American Way, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70816

At our stage of life, we have lost and are losing so many of our classmates, but John - this hurts. He was such a special guy - we all have wonderful memories. Always looked forward to our class reunions and have some fun trying to remember those "memories". So much love to his wonderful family.
