Benjamin Liles Cook, Sr.

October 29, 1934 - August 4, 2025

DENMARK - Benjamin Liles Cook, Sr., 90, of Denmark, passed away on August 4, 2025. He was the son of the late Benjamin Aurther Cook and Margaret Carpenter Cook.

Ben was born October 29, 1934, in Atlanta, Ga. He attended Walterboro High School during his early years and graduated from Denmark High School in 1953. Following graduation, he attended Clemson University earning his Bachelor's Degree in Dairy Science in 1957. On July 1, 1961, Ben married the love of his life, Margie Altman. Together they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage and built a life centered around faith, family, and community. Ben began his career as a local dairy farmer and later retired from the South Carolina Public School System, serving in both the Barnwell and Denmark-Olar School Districts.

A faithful member of Denmark First Baptist Church for more than 65 years, Ben served in many capacities, including Deacon Board, Teacher of the Jim Tant Sunday School class, Finance Committee, Pastor Search Committee, Senior Adult Ministry, Homebound Ministry, and as a founding member of the Denmark FBC Daycare. He also dedicated countless hours to community service through the Denmark Lions Club, Bamberg County Meals on Wheels, and other local initiatives.

Ben proudly served in the South Carolina National Guard for over 25 years. He was also the longtime President of the Denmark Cemetery Association, a role he faithfully held until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie Altman Cook. He is survived by his children: Benjamin "Liles" (Sandy) Cook, Jr., John (Jackie) Cook, Ricky (Niki) Cook; grandchildren: Kyle (Allie) Cook, Bretta (Camden) Kittrell, Christin Crosby, Brent (Cassie) Cook, Kara Cook, Austin (Gayle) Cook, Coby (Emily) Cook, Kelsey Cook; great-grandchildren: Camden Kittrell, Jr., Oaklyn Crosby, Lainey Kittrell, Cole Kittrell, Delilah Cook, Walker Cook, Tate Cook, and Weslie Cook. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Williamson; niece, Dawn (Stuart) Henry; nephew, Jimmy (Anne) Williamson; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Denmark First Baptist Church, 433 Beech Ave., Denmark, S.C., officiated by Reverend Andy Hunter. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Denmark Cemetery.

Ben will be remembered for his unwavering faith, service to others, and deep love for his family. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
