Carol Benoit Obituary

Carol Benoit, a beloved mother, devoted neurologist, and compassionate healer, passed away on January 5, 2024, at the age of 74. Born in New England in 1949, Carol was the eldest child of Eleanor and H. Charles Benoit. She grew up in a nurturing environment that fostered her lifelong commitment to helping others.

Carol's journey in medicine began later in life, demonstrating her remarkable determination and passion for learning. After completing her undergraduate degree at Wheaton College and a Master's Degree at Drake University, she embarked on a new path at the age of 35, entering medical school in Des Moines, IA, while raising her three children. Her passion for and fascination with the human brain led her to choose neurology as her specialty.

In her two-decade-long career as a neurologist in Orangeburg, SC, Carol tirelessly served an underserved population. Her dedication to her patients was unwavering, and her kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on the community.

Her legacy is carried on by her three children, Jonathan Fischer, Emily Fischer-Bunker, and Ian Fischer, as well as her four grandchildren, who remember her as not just a mother and grandmother, but a role model of resilience and selflessness. Carol was a guiding light in their lives, instilling values of kindness, generosity, and the importance of serving others.

A funeral mass will be held to honor Carol's life at 11 am on January 13th at Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church in Summerville, SC. The service will be a celebration of a life well-lived, dedicated to family, faith, and the well-being of others.

Carol's memory will be cherished forever in the hearts of those she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and a life that exemplifies the power of determination and the beauty of caring for others.

Just found out about Dr. Benoit's passing. I worked with her at the Rehab Centre in Orangeburg for a few years and was also a patient. She was a wonderful doctor and passionate about her patient's health.

Carol was a great friend and walking buddy. I have had few friends, who were kinder or more generous with compliments. She was the sister I never had.

Dr. Benoit was a colleague and a teacher/mentor of mine. During her time at the Family Health Centers, Inc. in Orangeburg, years ago, she taught me lessons in medicine, specifically Migraine Headache management that I still use today! I am so sorry to hear of her passing and her family has my deepest condolences! Medicine and the community has lost a true health champion and she will be missed!
