DERICK VOLGER
JERSEYVILLE — Derick Volger, 47, passed away May 26, 2017 at 4:31 p.m. at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born April 18, 1970, in Alton. He married Janelle Marshall on June 17, 2000, in Grafton, Illinois.
Derick is my husband and best friend. We spent over 20 years together taking care of each other. I miss him more than words can say. He was funny, loving and would go out of his way to help anyone. His favorite thing to do was to go fishing. He kept ice and chicken livers in the freezer, always ready for a trip to the family farm pond to fish. Derick had a dance style like no other. It didn't take much encouragement to have him show off his dance moves. Everyone always had a good time when he was around. We moved to town four years ago and he took pride in his garden and enjoyed building a campfire in the back yard as often as possible. He pushed himself to do these things even on his bad days. When asked how did you survive cancer, Derick would simply reply, "I never took my gloves off". He was a fighter. He held on for four years until his loved ones had the strength to let him go. He was surround by me: (Janelle), his parents Mark and Mary, and his two brothers, Jason and Chad in his last days. Now we find comfort in knowing he is in heaven and doesn't have to suffer anymore. My love is truly missed by his countless friends and entire family. He is one of those people you will never forget.
Derick is survived by his wife: Janelle Volger of Jerseyville; father: Mark Volger of Bethalto; mother: Mary Smith-Riker of Alton; stepfather: Kevin Riker of Alton; two brothers: Chad Volger of Alton and twin Jason Volger of Alton; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Jim and Jean Marshall of Jerseyville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Memorial service will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Pastor Brent Meyer.
