James Custer Obituary

James Lee Custer
James Lee Custer, 86, born on April 14, 1939 passed away on July 15, 2025 surrounded by friends and family in the comfort of his home in Carrollton. He was the beloved son of Wayne and Dorothy Adcock Custer.
Jim is survived and missed by his loving wife, Catherine, and their two daughters, Bonnie (Gerry) Weinert and Connie (John) Newcomer. Jim was the loving brother of Gale, Frank, Roland, Kenny, Mary, Greta, and Dorothy. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kristy, Jamie and Kyle (Bonnie) and Leigh Ann and Tara (Connie), along with ten great-grandchildren who all love him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Floren, Donald, and Dave Custer.
After graduation from Greenfield High School, Jim worked at Laclede Steel Mill in Alton until retirement in 2001. He met Catherine at Days Diner in Carrollton in 1958 after a prayer to God to show him the woman he would spend his life with. They married on December 21, 1959 and cherished their vows for 65, representing a loving example of the commitment of marriage to those around them. Jim and Catherine raised their family at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton, where Jim attended services for 65 years, was an elder for 50 years, and taught the book of Revelations. Those who know Jim will remember him by his love for nature and gardening, trap shooting, spending time with family, making fishing lures, and his unwavering faith.
Jim's passing has left a space in the hearts of friends and family, and we ask that he be remembered for the impact he had on those around him. Jim will forever remind those who knew him of our choice to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service, as Christ modeled for us.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2025 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton with burial to follow in Carrollton City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton is assisting the family.
