ROSS 'ROSCO' MELLENTHIN
BETHALTO — Ross "Rosco" Mellenthin, 72, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Saturday March 5, 2016 at home with his family by his side while under the care of BJC Hospice.
He was born December 14, 1943, in Alton, Illinois, the son of Ralph William Mellenthin and Mary Bernice Baker.
Ross married Heidi Bauer on February 21, 1964, in Germany. She survives.
He served in the Army and the Army Reserves for 21 ½ years during the Vietnam War and also in Desert Storm. He was a lifetime member of the Alton VFW Post 1308, the Bethalto American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and retired from Owen's Illinois Glass. He was a huge Nascar fan, an avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan and enjoyed Lionel Trains. He also loved to go to McDonalds in Bethalto and drink coffee every morning with his friends.
Ross is survived by his wife, Heidi; three daughters, Marion (Dwain) Burnham, Barb Mellenthin and Robin Durbin, all of Bethalto, six grandchildren, Stephanie (Rob) Stevenson of Collinsville, Jamie and Jordan Burnham, Emily Lackey and Tayler and Ethan Durbin, two great-grandchildren, Lillian and Jon Stevenson; several siblings, Floyd (Berdella) Baker of Alton, and David, Bob, Gene, Norma, Albert, Debbie, Marie, Zita and Janice.
The family would like to thank their wonderful nurse Chonna Tupper for being there for the family.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Chaplain Bruce Baumberger officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to 5A's animal shelter or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
