Alice Carling Obituary

Alice Jermyn Carling, 77, a resident of Roaring Brook Twp., and formerly of Scranton, died Friday at St. Mary's Villa Nursing Home, Elmhurst. Her husband of 51 years is John G. "Jack" Carling.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Ellen "Nellie" Morris Jermyn. A 1951 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, she was employed by the W.L. Maxon Corp., Old Forge. She later attended Milligan College, Tennessee, where she received a Bachelor of Science in physical education. She was employed by Scranton's YWCA as a physical education director from 1957-1960. Later, while raising her family, she was a swimming instructor at the YMCA in Dunmore. For many years, both she and her husband were actively involved as volunteers in Scranton Pocono Girl Scout Council activities, especially at "cookie time" each winter. Alice was also a troop leader and neighborhood representative on the council. She was a member of Moscow United Methodist Church and was a "Key" person with Church Women United and also served on the Scranton District United Methodist Women's team.

She and her husband were married April 18, 1959, at the First Christian Church, Scranton, where she remained active throughout the years, especially in its Christian Women's Fellowship.

Alice was a loving and caring person who served others. She always sought out the good in those she met, including her friends, family and others. She particularly enjoyed participating in the local prison ministry and the Angel Tree program during the holidays. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends and had visited Europe three times as well as Alaska, Hawaii and Bermuda. She especially enjoyed spending part of eight winters in the Florida Keys.

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Mary's Villa Skilled Nursing Home and at Mercy Hospital's Hospice Unit for the professional and caring attention given to Alice during her time at each facility.

Also surviving are four children, Barbara Long and husband, Joe Jr., Madison Twp.; Kenneth Carling and wife, Jackie Matthews Carling, Spring Brook Twp.; John Carling Jr. and wife, Allison Guse Carling, Moscow; and Wendy Simons and husband, Wesley Sr., Jefferson Twp.; 11 grandchildren, Joshua, Austin and Leah Long; Chris Carling; Zachary, Alexander, Mitchell, Brendan and Olivia Carling; and Kylie and Wesley Simons Jr.; a great-grandson, Connor Long; a granddaughter-in-law, Tiffany Heller; a sister, Jane Edwards, Afton, N.Y.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, John Edwards Jermyn and Robert William Jermyn.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Home, 3 First St., Spring Brook Twp., with the Rev. Jon Buxton, pastor of Moscow United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Moscow United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 126 Church St., Moscow, PA 18444 or the North Pocono Public Library Capital Fund, 113 Van Brunt St., Moscow, PA 18444. Jack, Barbara, Ken, John and Wendy,

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember staying with you guys and feeling really loved and welcome. Alice was a great woman and I loved her very much. You guys have been more than family to me and each have shaped my life. Alice was the greatest female role model anyone could have. I love you all and know that Alice is safe in the arms of her Savior! I am grateful that Jack and Alice drove to upstate NY to come to my wedding and that is a cherished memory.
Peace and Love to you all.
I love you
