Carmela M. Sarry

Carmela M. "Carm" Sarry, 95, formerly of Dunmore, died Tuesday morning in the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, where she resided.

Born and raised in Dunmore, daughter of the late Anthony and Elvira Gregory Sarry, Carmela was a graduate of Dunmore High School and Marywood College. Following graduation, she served her one-year internship as a dietitian at the Polyclinic Hospital in New York City. Upon completion of her internship, she enlisted in the Army in the Women's Medical Specialist Corps. She served in the Army for 31 months. Except for two months in this country, the remainder of her Army career was spent overseas, during World War II, attached to the Medical Corps of the Fifth Army in Africa and Italy.

Following her discharge, she continued her dietetic career in the medical sections of the VA offices in both Scranton and Plains Twp. When the VA Hospital in Plains Twp. opened in 1950, she was appointed as staff dietitian and rapidly worked her way up to chief of the dietetic service until her retirement.

Carm was an avid bowler and was very well-known in the local, state and national women's bowling associations. She was president of the Scranton Women's Bowling Association for 25 years. During those years, she became a director on the board of the Pennsylvania Women's Bowling Association for 12 years and then became its first vice president for nine years. During her years of involvement in the various local, state and national bowling associations, she travelled to 25 different states to attend the various state and national meetings and their respective tournaments. She and her local association members were actively involved in the yearly March of Dimes Bowling Tournament to raise funds for their many causes. In 1979, Carm was inducted in the Chic Feldman Sports Hall of Fame and she was one of the first members of the Scranton Women's Bowling Association's Hall of Fame.

She was a permanent member of Post 0013 American Legion in Dunmore, and the Disabled American War Veterans Association. She was an active supporter of her parish, SS. Anthony and Rocco in Dunmore and its school, and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. For years she served as a lector at St. Anthony of Padua Church.

Carm also enjoyed playing bingo at several area venues for many years. When bowling was no longer her main activity, she became a loyal patron of bingo, where she developed many new friendships.

Surviving are three nieces, JoAnn Sarry Galada, Adele Nolfi Ben'Ary and Patricia Sarry Salerno; a nephew. Dr. Anthony Sarry; four great-nephews, John Galada, Jeffrey Galada, Michael Ben'Ary and Louis Sarry; a great-niece, Adrienne Salerno; a great-great-niece, Grace Ben'Ary; a great-great-nephew, Owen Ben'Ary; as well as many cousins and dear friends.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Louis; and her sister, Johanna Nolfi.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for the excellent care, compassion and dedication to Carmela's care. Her final years were spent there in comfort and contentment.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment will be private at St. Michael's Cemetery, Dunmore. There will be no procession to the cemetery.
