Daniel Karbowski Obituary

Daniel J. Karbowski, 81, of Chinchilla, died Monday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was the husband of Joan Eshmont Karbowski. The couple would have been married 51 years in October.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles and Sophia Kowalski Karbowski. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School, and went on to proudly serve his country in the Army. Dan was employed as a bus driver for Greyhound Bus Co. for 27 years, and also by Allied Services in Scranton for 13 years. He was a former member of the South Abington Lions Club, and was a member of the Providence of God Lithuanian National Catholic Church in Scranton, where he served as a lector.

Known by his family and friends as "Danno" or "Dan the Handyman," he loved to work. He was a true handyman and was able to fix anything. He also loved to volunteer his time to the Scranton Cultural Center and the Red Barons, and served as a Lackawanna County state constable. But his greatest love in life was his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

Also surviving are two daughters, Danielle Palumbo and husband, William, South Abington Twp.; and Kristen Morrow and husband, William, Harleysville; a brother, Ronald Karboski and wife, Rosalyn, Moscow; two sisters, Joan Ferguson and husband, Ronald, Palm Harbor, Fla.; and Gloria Silva, Lawrenceville, Ga.; six grandchildren, Joshua Palumbo and wife, Jacqueline, Scranton; Michael Palumbo and wife, Jennifer, Scranton; and Alexander Palumbo, South Abington Twp.; and William, Joseph, and Madeline Morrow, all of Harleysville; one great-grandson, Ryan Palumbo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Karboski.

The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Peters, Dr. Kristin Liptock, Dr. Charles Stivala, Dr. Manisha Srinivasa and Dr. Jacqueline Lee, and the whole staff on the 6th floor at Geisinger Community Medical Center, and the staff at Mountain View Care Center for the wonderful care and compassion shown for Daniel during his illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. from the Providence of God Lithuanian National Catholic Church, 1743 N. Sumner Ave., Scranton, with services by the Most Rev. Anthony Mikovsky. All those attending are asked to go directly to church. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery, South Abington Road, Clarks Summit.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of Northeast PA, 700 Vine St., Scranton, PA 18510, or the Providence of God Lithuanian National Catholic Church at the above address.

My deepest & heartfelt sympathy to all of Daniel's family. I knew Dan from his volunteer days at the Scranton Cultural Center & the Marywood theatres. I was so pleased to see Dan wearing his red velvet jacket. We talked about him wearing that jacket at a performance of the Nutcracker during the last Christmas season he volunteer with me. How every handsome he truly looked. I only have wonderful memories of speaking with and working with Daniel. I learned of his illness just about on it's onset. Actually, I called him to ask whether he would be available to usher for a performance at Marywood. He told me he was not feeling very well & was going for tests. Later upon learning from his wife, of Dan's diagnosis, I am sad to say that I did not follow up with his family. Please forgive me. Being a breast cancer survivor - second time around - for six years now, I could not bring myself to even ask how he was progressing with his treatments, or not. Reading of his passing, I realized that Dan and I were both from West Scranton & went to the same high school - he was only a couple of years my senior. Now, I truly know why we hit it off so completely. I will always have the most pleasant & happy memories of knowing and enjoying Dan's company in our later years. May he rest in peace - & be free of this dreadful sickness forever.

Danielle, Joan and family....It is with heavy heart that I send this message. I just found out this evening of Dan's passing. Last he and I spoke, he was on feeling better and planned to call me when he had time. My heartfelt sympathy to you all. On behalf of the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, he was a great asset to the Red Coat Volunteers and will be sorely missed.

Danielle, I am very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I hope you and your family will find some comfort in this time of grief. I have many fond and warm memories of your Dad from hanging out with the gang at your house growing up. Many times your Mother cleaned up my scrapes and cuts from scatebaord falls. I always called you Mom, Mom. When I asked your Dad if I could call him Dad, he said "Call me sir". So I called him, Sir Dad. Bless you all, John "Ollie" Richards

What words can some up the greatest man that has been in hundreds of people's lives.... Anyone who has ever met Dan can tell you stories about him and how he was a great, selfless family man. As my grandfather, he was my hero, my role model and my personal mentor throughout my life. It truly is a tragic loss, but he will always be with us in spirit.
Love you Grandpa!
See you soon.....
