J. Hinton Obituary

J. Timothy Hinton Sr., 74, of Scranton, died peacefully on Sunday surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.

Tim was born on Oct. 30, 1943, in Scranton to the late David S. and Alice Scanlan Hinton. He was a loyal alumnus of St. Paul's High School (class of 1961) and the University of Scranton (class of 1965). He was a member of St. Paul's Church.

Tim had a long and successful career at IBM as a marketing representative in the Washington, D.C., area. After his retirement from IBM, Tim returned to Scranton, where he owned and operated Timothy Hinton Furniture Restoration.

He was an avid fisherman who loved to read, listen to music and watch movies. A lifelong student of history, politics and economics, Tim's sense of intellectual curiosity permeated his life. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends. His memories never faded of his adventures as a boy growing up in Green Ridge with his band of lifelong friends. Tim was especially proud of his seven grandchildren: Sara, John, Emily and Daniel Hinton; Nicole and Michael Tyler; and Logan Taylor, who were all a great source of happiness and fondly referred to him as Pop.

Tim is survived his three children: son, Timothy and his wife, Theresa, of Dickson City; daughter, Melissa and her husband, Thomas Dougherty, of Ashburn, Va.; and daughter, Rachel and her husband, Scott Taylor, of Carlsbad, Calif. He is also survived by his former wife, Susan Jenkins Hinton.

In addition, Tim is survived by three brothers: Christopher of Dunmore, Michael (Jake) and his wife, Ann, of Scranton; and Philip of Montgomery Village, Md.; and four sisters: Margaret McMullen and her husband, Patrick; Marianne Rader, Kathleen Sweeney and her husband, Patrick, all of Scranton; and Sara Bubser and her husband, Andrew, of Waverly; plus a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

Tim was also preceded in death by two brothers, David and Brian; and a sister, Maureen Propst.

The Hinton family extends its deepest gratitude to all of Tim's caregivers, especially Dr. Richard Gratz, the amazing staff and nurses at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and his loving brother Chris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, to be celebrated by his cousin, Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn. Interment will be private.

Friends and family may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge St., Dunmore.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, 334 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA 18510.

A wonderful gentleman has gone, an intellectually curious good man, always most interested in the human pageant. I have had the pleasure of knowing Tim since before he had his First Communion! Rest In Peace Timmy. Your memory is & will be forever blessed among your Green Ridge Merry Band of colorful contemporaries, like my brother Brian, Gerry Shanley, et al. You know who you are!
All of you who hung out at the Hinton House can relax as the statutes of limitations on your childhood adventures have expired.
