James J. Kanton, 73, of Dickson City, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Karmol Kanton. They would have celebrated 49 years of marriage in November.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Dorothy Tomasaitis Kanton, and he was a member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City, along with its Holy Name Society. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and, after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War, in Korea. He was a member of the American Legion Post 665 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5937, both of Dickson City. He was employed by "Olde Good Things," Scranton as a glass cutter.
Jim was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle who enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family, and hunting at the "Tin Can," but mostly he loved attending all his grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and he loved cheering them on. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are a son, James Kanton and wife, Alicia, Scott Twp.; a daughter, Diane Wasp and husband, Jon, Olyphant; grandchildren, Olivia, Alexis and Logan Wasp, Hudson and Daphne Kanton; siblings, Robert Kanton and wife, Johanna, Throop; William Kanton and wife, Ellen, Nicholson; Lorraine Borgia and husband, Tony, Thompson; and Mary Kanton, Clarks Summit; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Thomas, Gerald and Frank Kanton.
Jim's funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City, celebrated by Monsignor Patrick Pratico, pastor. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
