Jay Schectman Obituary
Jay Scott Schectman, 63, of Scranton, passed away Thursday morning at home. Surviving is his companion, Julie Hughes.
Born in Scranton, he is the son of the former Rene'e Edelsohn and the late Dr. Samuel Schectman, O.D. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and the University of Scranton, where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting. He was recently employed by Luzerne County as the transportation planner and before that, he was the compliance project manager and transportation planner for Lackawanna County.
Jay was secretary of the Democratic Party of the city of Scranton, president and treasurer of Temple Israel in Dunmore, a member of the University of Scranton's Purple Club, a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of NEPA and a committee member for the Hook O'Malley Race Against Cancer as well as the annual O'Malley family community holiday events. He also was a former board member of Temple Israel in Scranton, executive director of the Better Business Bureau of NEPA, former board member of the Jewish Home, past president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of Amos Lodge of B'nai Brith and chairman of the Americanism Award Dinner, and a former member of the Temple Israel Choir in Scranton. He was an automobile enthusiast and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Also surviving are his brother, Gary, Scranton; cousins, Dr. Gail Edelsohn and husband, Henry Mann, Carol Sherman, Lori Keane and husband, Chris, Marc Bernstein and wife, Carolyn, and Bruce Danoff and wife, Allison.
He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Ida and Leon Edelsohn and Esther and Ben Schectman; aunts and uncles, Alfred Endelsohn and wife, Mitzi, Sally Bernstein and husband, Sig, and Jane Danoff and husband, Harry.
The funeral will be Sunday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with a service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment, Temple Israel, Dunmore.
Shiva will be held at the Schectman family home Monday through Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

I am so sad to hear of Jay's passing. I haven't spent much time with Jay in probably 25 years, yet hearing this news really hit me. He was just that kind of guy. Just thinking back on some of our fun times makes me just smile. His kind caring spirit, his funny wit, his consideration for others.
