Mary Brunton Obituary

Mary Clarke Brunton, Dunmore, died Friday at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore, after a courageous battle with cancer. She and her husband, Thomas I. Brunton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 26.

Born Dec. 21, 1934, in Dunmore, daughter of the late Patrick and Julia Kelly Clarke, she was a member of Christ the King Church, Dunmore, since its founding in 1949. She was a graduate of Dunmore High School and, upon graduation, she was employed by the Bell Telephone Co., Scranton, as a business service representative. She was later employed by the Diocese of Scranton, where she served as communications secretary to then- Bishop John O'Connor until his departure to New York City. She worked at the diocesan chancery until her retirement.

Mary was a member of the Christ the King Altar and Rosary Society and its Quilting Club for many years. She was most recently a member of the Theresians of Scranton and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was also a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the St. Joseph's Center Auxiliary.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kristin Liptock, Dr. Terrence Lenahan and the caregivers of Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Hospice Community Care for their care and kindness.

She passed away peacefully on Friday.

Also surviving are a son, Thomas Brunton, Scranton; a daughter, Katie Holstrom and husband, Daniel, Yardley; three grandchildren, Timothy, Kelly and Christina Holstrom; a sister, Gertrude Sheridan, Dunmore; a brother, Thomas Clarke, Scranton; a sister-in-law, Margaret Clarke, Boston; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Patrick Clarke, Gerald Clarke and James J. Clarke; three sisters, Christina Butler, Julia Kays and Catherine Keirnan; and a nephew, James J Clarke Jr.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Thomas J. Golden Funeral Home, 2004 Delaware St., Dunmore, with Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, Quincy Avenue, Dunmore. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of the funeral.

Friends may call Tuesday, 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may go St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.

Please accept my deepest expression of sympathy on the death of Mary. I have many fond memories of her and our days working in the Tribunal Office of the Diocese of Scranton.
