Thomas (Tom) Scanlon, 68, of Scranton, died unexpectedly Saturday at home.
Born July 14, 1954, and raised in the Minooka section of Scranton, he was the son of the late Paul J. Sr. and Margaret Mary (Lehman) Scanlon. A graduate of the former South Catholic High School where he was a baseball standout, he then earned his bachelor's degree in business from Marywood University before studying for his master's degree at Temple University. He taught business courses for the N.I.E. before working as a stock broker for Merrill Lynch. He was perhaps most well-known as the owner and operator of several area bars and restaurants, most notably the Dunmore Deli.
Able to make friends wherever he went, Tom had an infectious personality. Undoubtedly caring, he was always there for his loved ones. He loved his sports, especially baseball (New York Yankees fan) and always enjoyed playing golf (a longtime member of the Elmhurst Country Club). He would never pass up a good Krispy Kreme glazed, the opportunity to go golfing or the chance to spend time with family and friends. He'll never be forgotten.
He is survived by his family, including his children, Devin Scanlon, Arlington, Va.; and Maggie Gurganus and husband, Michael, Bentonville, Ark.; brothers, Patrick Scanlon and wife, Catherine (Cathy), South Abington Twp.; and Paul Scanlon Jr. and wife, Cindy, Laurel, Md.; his former wife, Sandy (Whah) Scanlon, Clarks Summit; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Friday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church.

Paul, Pat and families,
So sad to hear of Tommy's passing. Gone to soon! I have many fond memories of us growing up in our Minooka neighborhood, playing hide and seek, sleigh riding trying to make the run to the Mexican rock, playing pool in our basement and the prom Frannie Higgins and I doubled with Tommy and Marguerite Wallace Coyle. The great friendship that started with our parents. One memory that stands out is when Tommy and I found a case of Donald Duck frozen orange juice on the corner of Cedar and Walsh St., we were so thrilled you'd think we won the lottery!
Sincere sympathies, sending prayers for all.
God Bless,
Mari and Rich Walsh

Tom was one of a kind that will not be forgotten. He lived life to the fullest, making everyone in earshot enjoy his humor. I was honored to have him as a Groomsman in my wedding, and equally thrilled to be a groomsman in his wedding. Being his friend was a blessing. Brian McCarthy

I am so saddened to hear of Tom's passing. We were boyhood friends in the southside of Scranton. Condolences and prayers to the Scanlon family.
