A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Edwin Henry Mathews, 48, of Cheneyville, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at his residence after a 5 month battle with cancer.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Edwin A. and Rosalie VanHoof Mathews; his maternal grandparents Henry J. and Blanche Vermaelen Vanderlick ; and one brother Paul G. Mathews.

A loving husband and father, Edwin was a well-known and respected Rapides Parish farmer for 30 years. Wearing his trademark blue overalls and John Deere cap, Edwin was happiest in the field. He enjoyed working with local youth, including his daughters, nieces and nephews, showing livestock at 4-H competitions. Edwin's infectious laugh, gentle nature, and knowledge of animals made him a favorite of everyone at the local livestock shows. He was a 1983 graduate of Holy Savior Menard High School, and attended LSU-A and Central Louisiana Technical Community College. Edwin was a board member of the McNutt Cotton Gin and a member of the Bayou Robert and Bayou Beouf Co-ops. He was a fan of NASCAR, LSU Sports, ASH Football and of course all things John Deere. Edwin was truly a people person, never meeting a stranger, and always helping others. Before being asked, Edwin offered his help, whether it was changing a flat tire, cutting a field or hauling a load of cane, he was always there. Edwin will be truly missed by all that knew him.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 22 years Melissa Vanderlick Mathews and their two daughters Elizabeth K. Mathews and Isabella L. Mathews all of Cheneyville; his parents Vernon M. and Cecilia Vanderlick Mathews of Alexandria; his siblings: Becky L. Smilie and her husband Jim of Woodworth, Vernon G. Mathews and his wife Jenny of Alexandria, Joel L. Mathews and his wife Ashley of Boyce, Patrick C. Mathews and his wife Kelly of Alexandria, and Mary Claire Meyer and her husband Justin of Addis, LA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers honored to serve will be Vernon G. Mathews, Joel L. Mathews, Patrick C. Mathews, Adam G. Mathews, Michael W. Smilie, Jeremy V. Mathews, Steve Halbert and Jeffrey P. Vanderlick.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim W. Smilie, Justin I. Meyer, Christopher J. Mathews, Bennett P. Mathews, Jacob I. Meyer and Henry Corley.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Rapides 4-H Foundation @ 300 Grady Britt Drive, Alexandria, LA 71302.
