Bob Applegate Obituary

Bob and Ann Applegate

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our parents Bob and Ann Applegate, former owners of Brighton St. Grocery for 23 years. They moved to Grass Valley in 1992 after visiting friends and fell in love with this town, found and bought the store that they loved so much. Disc Golf was up and coming and they embraced the disc golfers and provided a lot of the disc 's, bags and goods for them. Bob enjoyed throwing them too!

After retiring, they dearly missed their friends, vendors and customers that came in daily, and always helped people who needed a hand or a small loan. The youngsters that came in for their 5 cent candies or a slushie now had grown and were parents themselves. A day didn't go by without one of them saying " Do you remember so and so?", or "Boy I miss him or her".

Bob was born in Spur, Texas on December 16, 1934. He had a wonderful childhood, with a large Texan family and was the youngest of 5. His family moved to Redondo Beach in 1950 where he went to Redondo Union High. He was active in Choir and Track, beach volleyball, fishing, and loved to dance and his 32 Ford. He was at a dance when he went outside and found a young lady sitting in his car with her feet up on the dash (he wasn't pleased). Low and behold it was Ann! They dated, fell in love and married in June 1958. He enlisted in the Army and they were sent to Ft Knox, KY. After serving, they moved to Torrance, CA where they raised their family.

Ann (Westlake) was born October 30, 1938 in Park Ridge, IL. Her family moved to Redondo Beach too, in 1952. She always loved animals and wanted to be a vet. During her life she bred and raised award winning Persian cats for over 30 years, one of which was the white cat named Snowbelle in the movie Stuart Little. She also did small dog rescues from the shelters in Sacramento. She was a very good cook which led her to buying a catering truck years back, which led to the sandwiches being made at the store. Her egg salad and chicken salad were the best!

They dearly loved their family, fishing at Fuller Lake and their 3 dogs Rowdy, Tiny and Schnitzel. They lived long lives till Bob passed of COVID July 30, 2021 and Ann not much longer on November 15, 2021 of Pneumonia. They are survived by daughters Linda (Pat) Holdaway of Corona, CA, Sheila Torry and Shannon Applegate of Grass Valley. Granddaughters Kristie Harada, Jessica, Katie and Jennifer Torry, Courtney Holdaway and Samantha ( Miguel) Bonales. Great grands Briella and Brooklyn Weddle and Carter (Harada) Robinson. Preceded in death by Glenn Robert Holdaway and Christopher Robert Applegate. And by extended family Darrell Torry and Robert Robinson.

We invite you to a long overdue Celebration of Life on Saturday May 20th at the Love building in Condon Park from 10-12pm. Lite refreshments will be served. For more info contact Sheila at [email protected].

The ashes were privately scattered at an earlier date.

We lived on Fawcett St. for years, and i often stopped by for supplies, saying 'howdy' to Bob & Ann, seeing his old white pickup, and enjoying those sandwiches. They were great people. I miss those days in the 90's... simpler times. Mike & Carol

We loved Bob we lived across the street from Brighton St. Market and went there almost daily. He and Ann have been missed. So sorry for the loss my prayers go to the family.

Two wonderful people who operated one of the last true neighborhood grocery stores. May you both rest in peace. You are truly missed as staples in the community Bob and Ann.
