Frederic Leong Obituary

Dr. Frederic Leong, 76, of Westerly, passed away on Feb. 5, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.
Frederic was the beloved husband of Cheryl (Hanson) Leong, and son to the late Frederic Leong, and Ng Lai-Ha.
Besides his devoted wife of 45 years, he leaves behind three children, Kimberly, Richard, Corey, and his wife Angela, as well as one grandchild, Maximus Leong. Frederic was looking forward to meeting his soon-to-be grandson. He will be sorely missed by his siblings: Norman Leong and his wife Doris, and Howard Leong and his wife Jean, several nieces and nephews, and his life-long college friends of 55 years, The Chinque.
Born in Hong Kong, China, Frederic came to America at the age of 8. He was a graduate of Winchester High School, located in Mass., and attended Tufts University as well as Tufts Medical School. Dr. Leong served his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boston, Mass.; and his residency at Rhode Island Hospital, and The Children's Hospital in Boston, where he was the Chief Resident. After completing his residency Frederic joined the military in Fort Carson, for two years, before retiring as a Major. Continuing with education as a doctor, he completed one year of fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital in Child Development, before coming to Westerly in 1974, where he joined The Westerly Medical Center. Nine years later Frederic went into private practice, and at the same time started working as a physician for Grasso Technical School in Groton, Conn. He also worked with many companies, such as; Harris Corporation, Imperial Wallpaper, American Felt and Filter, etc. Eventually, Dr. Leong regretfully ended his practice due to illness.
After retirement, he enjoyed travelling the world with his wife Cheryl, reading, movies, long car rides, and trying every new food that he could. Frederic dedicated his life to help others; he even made home visits, and never lost his passion for children's medicine. Frederic's family and friends would describe him as loyal, and extremely compassionate.
Calling hours for Dr. Frederic Leong will be held on Wednesday at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 7 Elm St. Westerly. Dear Daddy, it's me your baby girl...ALWAYS! I have never stopped missing you. You were and remain my number One Hero! If people only knew how much you accomplished and your passion behind all that you did. You came to America on a huge boat, just a little boy.... learning English from the Ship crew. You told me that you wanted to give back, because you were grateful to become an American, that was why you decided to become a Doctor. And Daddy... the stories I've heard, and continue to hear from past patients, parents of children you cared for, co-workers, etc.... you were the Best Pediatrician ever! Until this day, I hear stories of you saving lives, your kindness and generosity, your compassion, loyalty, humor, and the list goes on... Many people's stories told with tears, and with so much appreciation. As your daughter, I didn't always see these things... you were my Dad, my teacher, the one who wanted to make sure I grew up to be a successful, happy, young lady... I did not show you enough gratitude, because I didn't know what the World, as an adult was going to be like. If only all kids knew.... But through my rebellious behavior, I was Always trying to make You and Mom proud. And You let me know that I did... every day as our days together were coming to an end. I'm forever grateful for those words... " I'm proud of you" ... " I love you" and all the conversations we had. I want everyone to know... my Dad taught me the most important things I know, so you can teach your kids... Never lie, loyalty, try your hardest, always have a sense of humor, respect people... your parents, your elders, your teachers... You never work a day in your life, if you love what you do. My father told me up to the day he left us... he loved what he did, and didn't consider it work... he didn't regret the decisions he made. My Dad is a Legend... he was a living legend before he passed. He is a Hero. There is so much more I could say, but We know.... I want to thank all of you who wrote something, who sent cards, who continue to share stories about him with me and others. If I run into you, and you knew my Dad, Dr. Leong, please share a memory you have, it means more than you know. Dad I may not be perfect, but I will always be your little girl, your Tinkerbell, Your Stinkerbell, and the Apple of your eye. Love you!

Dear Mrs Leong and family, My wife Lisa and I were blessed to have your husband as our pediatrician. He took excellent care of our children Anthony and Andrea. We believe his quick action saved our daughter Andrea's life when he diagnosed her with a rare infection that could have led to spinal meningitis. At his recommendation we took her to an infectious disease specialist and this action along with the staff at Westerly Hospital cared for Andrea after treating her infection with an antibiotic that was found to fight her condition. We are forever grateful that your husband never hesitated to refer us to the infectious disease speacialist. We will pray for your rapid healing during this difficult time. We will have the Marion Fathers of West Stockbridge, MA say a mass for the repose of the soul of your husband.

Love the D'Agnenica Family, formally of Ashaway

Dr. Leong was mine and my 5 siblings pediatrician through the 70s and 80s. When I had children, he was their pediatrician too. He would always ask about my mother who had health problems when I brought my children in. He retired shortly after my mother passed away; he said he wanted to be able to travel and spend time with his family. I was very happy to read in his obituary that he was able to do this. He was always so caring and compassionate! Thank you for your kindness and care! Sending much love to the family.

Dr. Leong was both my children's pediatrician in the 70's and 80's and was the most wonderful doctor. I was very young when I had my daughter and he always respected me as a young mom and helped me in any way he could. I cherish the years that he was our pediatrician and friend. May comfort be with his family at this difficult time.

Dear Leong family,
I will always remember "Docs" patience with his patients, my children. He always helped calm our concerns and allow up to bring the children along at their own pace and not the pace of our families expectations. And for that we thank you kindly!

God keep you and your family "Doc!"

Dr. Leong became my pediatrician in 1982 when my daughter was born. She was my first child and Dr. Leong helped me with every question I needed asked. He was incredible. Then when my son was born he once again helped me. He used to tell me no question was dumb. He was always there. I was heartbroken when he had to give up his practice. Every time that I ran into him he asked me how my kids were by their names. He will be missed. With my deepest sympathies to his entire family.

Dr Leong was our pediatrician for our three children, and was always on top of their Heath! He was especially instrumental with one of our daughters health when she was born with a birth defect that could have been devasting if he didn't push to get her the emergent treatment she needed. We have always been very fond of him and wished he was our regular doctor for the adults! He will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy for the family.

Dr. Leong was absolutely the most caring compassionate Doctor I have ever met. He took care of all three of my kids and it broke my heart when he retired. My deepest sympathies are with Cheryl and his family and also with Lucille at this time.
