George Kent Obituary

George Louis ("Grampa") Kent, born on March 4, 1910 in Mt. Ivey, N.Y., passed away on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 in Westerly, R.I.
George Kent was descended from Edward (Doten) Doty, who came to North America on the Mayflower in 1620. He was the second son of Morris E. Kent and Katherine Kelley Kent. George's wife of 53 years, Edwina Matthews Kent, died in 1988.
George is survived by his two sons and their wives, George E. and Lynn Kent, of Charlestown, R.I., and Stuart M. and Paula (Susie) Kent of Dallas, Texas; by his five grandchildren, Peter Kent of Virginia Beach, Va., Laurie Kent of Cambridge, Mass., Susan Kent Reed of Milton, Mass., David Kent of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jennifer Kent Montoya of Bogota, Colombia, and by 10 great-grandchildren.
Until his retirement, George worked in the Engineering Dept. of the Cottrell Printing Press Company (later the Harris Corporation), designing folding and cutting mechanisms for printing presses, and was a member of the Cottrell quarter century club.
Before and after his retirement, he pursued his lifetime interests in painting, woodcarving and golf. His craftsmanship and talent for wood carving are reflected in many items displayed in Christ Church, Westerly, and the two alp horns that he carved are used on festive occasions at Camp Ogontz in New Hampshire. Until after his 100 birthday, he was a member of and sang in both the Christ Church Westerly Choir and the Westerly Community Chorus.
A service to celebrate George Kent's life will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m., at Christ Church (Elm Street) in Westerly. Burial will follow in River Bend Cemetery, Beach Street, Westerly. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his memory to the Christ Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly. For online condolences, please visit www.buckler-johnston.com

Rick & Marcia Considine

September 13, 2010

To all the Kent family and "grampa's" Westerly "family" Rick and Marcia Considine send our sincere condolences on the death of one of our most favorite persons in life. If anyone deserved to live until over 100 years it is George. He brought such joy to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy to Camp Ogontz will live on forever as we sit in the green Adirondack chairs looking over his favorite lake in the mountains. A life well spent! He will be sorely missed!
