Joseph McKernan Obituary

Joseph B. McKernan, Jr., 75, beloved husband for 54 years of Irene (Sylvestre) McKernan, of Pawcatuck, passed away at the Westerly Hospital on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
Born in New London, CT he was the son of the late Joseph McKernan, Sr. and Joyce McKernan, as well as his adoptive mother, the late Shirley McKernan
Joseph was a graduate of Stonington High School, class of 1966. He earned his BS, MS and 6th year certificate from Southern Connecticut State University.
Retiring in 2008, he spent 37 years at the Stonington High School as a teacher in the science department and held administrative roles in science and athletics. In his tenure, he taught siblings and many other family members and often was known in the school as "Uncle Joe" or "Pops". He was driven to form the character of youth both in and out of the classroom and spent many years as a coach of several sports including wrestling, baseball, golf, and football. He enjoyed working at Elm Ridge Golf Course with many close friends during the summer and following retirement.
As a pillar of the community, he continued his work supporting several organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Stonington Recreation Commission, Stonington High School Hall of Fame Committee, and was an active member of St. Mary's parish. In his spare time, he loved golfing, spending time with family and friends, and cheering on New England and UCONN teams. He adored his grandkids and supported them in all they do.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife, Irene; daughter Paula Boulanger and husband Bryan of Ada, OH; son Scott McKernan and wife Audrey of Naples, FL; and nine grandchildren, Liam, Alden, Neilan, Maire, Nevan, Eala, Keira, Kiley and Meaghan. Joe also leaves behind his siblings, Janis McKernan-Markoff of Blackstone, MA, Jeffrey McKernan (Donna) of Concord, NC, Jay McKernan (Gail) of Groton, CT, Jody Roby of Pawcatuck, Jill LaPiana (Fred) of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Michael McKernan also of Pawcatuck. He also leaves behind many more family members; you know who you are and he loved you all.
Special thanks to the Westerly Hospital and Beacon Hospice for all of the care provided to Joe and support they've given to the family.

Irene,
I´m so sorry for your loss.
Reading Joe´s obituary and the many loving remembrances on this page make it clear that the young man who stood out during my high school years as kind and mannerly with a love for life and learning had remained the same.
Much love to you and your family at this difficult time.

Irene and family,

Please accept my most deepest and heartfelt condolences. Not sure where to begin but my thoughts take me back to your wedding and photographs at your house . . . to photos of Joe reffing the long jump and me sailing through the air . . .then to coaching Scott during summer conditioning camps.

I'm totally shocked and taken back at the news. Spoke with Joe about a month ago regarding our "shared" health concerns. Moreover, I was going to stop in fast night (10/20/23) after having "fish and chips" in Stonington but I noticed a couple of cars in the driveway and decided to head back to Westerly. Thought I would swing by on Saturday to chat with him. Once at home, I began to read the paper . . . low and behold I saw that cousin Joe had passed.

Please hold near and dear the memories of Joe and let these guide you and be your strength moving forward.

Lastly, I leave you with this . . .

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; . . . . .
'And when the time comes for you to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.'
(Book of Ecclesiastes/Turn, turn, turn . . .The Byrds 1965/Lee Ann Womack 2000)

Thought and Prayers,

Kevin Kelliher

To the McKernan Family:
I first met Joe back in1972 when I began the wrestling program at Fitch High. Furthermore, I officiated wrestling and we met again in the gym on the mat!! I then coached golf and out paths crossed once again. I, also, remember his son, Scott playing sports while at SHS. Always a friendly smile and great attitude, we were friends and coaching amigos! My condolences on his passing as I will remember him in my thoughts and prayers. A GOOD MAN taken too soon!
May your soul rest in peace, my coaching and teaching brother!

Joe and I rode the bus in school together. He never was afraid of hard work. And you could count on him for a smile and a good word. We only saw each other at reunions after high school. But I looked forward to it. It´s so very painful losing one of the absolute, total good guys. Irene and his entire family can be so proud, I´m sure they know.

May he rest in peace and his family remember so many good times - and accomplishments. All of us were lucky to have known Joe. God bless you, Irene.
