Samuel Gingerella Obituary

Samuel James "Sammy" Gingerella died on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the age of 63, at the Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Sammy is survived by his two sisters, Lisa M. Tirrell of Pawcatuck, CT and Catherine A. Studley of Lakeville, MA, his brother-in-law's, Ken E. Tirrell and John E. Studley Jr., a nephew, Brian W. Tirrell and two nieces Andrea J. Tirrell and Rachael A. Studley. Sam enjoyed his many cousins in R.I. and CT. Sam is preceded in death by his father and mother Frank and Melanie (Gagnon) Gingerella.
Sammy was born on June 10, 1953, in Westerly, R.I. and graduated from the Westerly High School in 1971. He played high school football for the Westerly Bulldogs and kept in touch with his teammates for many years. Sam attended the University of Rhode Island and he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He left to find his true calling in radio.
Sammy began his work life at a young age at the Crossroad's Restaurant, owned and operated by his grandfather, father and uncle. He became interested in radio broadcasting and began his radio career at WERI in Westerly R.I., alongside Chris Berman now of ESPN. He ultimately made his home in Middletown, CT, where he resided for many years up until his death. For over 15 years and just before his illness, he was a radio personality and reporter at WTIC 1080 AM, in Farmington, CT and he hosted the program Face Connecticut which aired every Sunday morning.
Sammy was an accomplished saxophone player and he played in numerous bands as a teen and adult. Most notably, he performed with the band Bastille. Bastille recorded a 44 rpm in 1972 which can be found and heard on the internet today. He played in numerous venues across New England. Sam enjoyed photography and taking pictures of landscapes and portraits of his family. He loved Misquamicut Beach and the gulf coast beaches of Florida. He loved surfing, sports, working out at the gym and dabbling with the piano and guitar. He especially loved the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and UConn Women's basketball teams. He adored his nephew Brian and his nieces Andrea and Rachael.
A memorial remembrance will be announced at a later date. As Sam lived with diabetes for most of his life, please consider donations to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 15829 Arlington, VA 22215. The family would like to especially thank the caregivers of Middlesex Hospital, ITN Central CT and all the wonderful, caring friends who assisted Sam each day.

"The Legend of The Monarch"
..."She was colorfully dressed in orange and black,
And try as a might I could not turn my back,
She floated elegantly with power and grace,
Her form was perfection with a lilt at the waist...
Then one chilly October day,
The time had come for her to go away
'I wish you could come with me,' her eyes seemed to say,
'I'll miss you Mr. Moth' til the end of my days.'...

Reading all the wonderful tributes to Sam brings back memories. He always had a smile, and laughter came easily. Russ Baldwin and I enjoyed the time we shared an apartment with Sam, though, remember Russ, he didnt like to do the dishes. Sam, though we lost touch I am pleased to know youve left behind many who will remember you fondly.

I became friends with Sam when we worked together at WERI. Sam, Tom Robustelli and I shared an apartment on Elm Street in Westerly when we three were just starting our careers in radio in the mid 70s. He loved his work and it showed in his craft, then, and in the years that followed. It may have been the best of our days in some respects; young bachelors on the air and on the beach whenever time allowed. My condolences to his family on his passing.

I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of Sam. I have known Sam since the 1980's. He was a wonderful friend, writer and sportscaster. He would tell me about a book he was writing and would read passages over the phone asking for my thoughts and input. I always told him to publish it because it was a great piece of work.
You were on my mind the last two weeks Sam. You are needed in heaven. We will miss you Sammy Cakes.

Rest in peace big brother. I am certain you are catching waves on endless warm, sunny days in all of your glory. The heartfelt and heartbreaking messages posted online from your friends, family and colleagues have reminded me about how you touched people during your time with us. Hearing their stories about you during your memorial service and celebrating your life was both sad and joyful. I want to thank our family, friends, relatives and coworkers for sharing their stores of you. You were a talented, professional, trustworthy, humble and fearless person. You showed us all how to handle adversity. It is still so hard to know you are gone but your unique voice will be forever with us. I still hear you when I answer the phone and you say "What's up Gags?" I wish for one such call today. In my heart I know you are at peace and pain free and that you are with our beloved Mom and Dad and that makes me forever happy. Love you always, Cathy

To the Gingerella family,

Please accept my warmest and most heartfelt condolences.

Growing up in the Pawcatuck/Westerly community, starting/ getting to know him from the early 1970's going forward in time, Sam and I shared many times together (with the crew) at Misquamicut Beach . . . most notably the Atlantis 2, the Wreck, the High Tide and of course on the beach. Whether catching rays, swimming, or throwing a frisbee at the waters edge we had "the times of our lives". Those youthful and wonderful memories of "becoming of age" are "etched in stone" in my memories. We did live and experience the "best times of our lives" at Misquamicut.

Sam and I also shared a passion for music and entertainment in general. We had many spirited conversations about all forms of music from pop, funk, soul, blues, rock, country, swing/big band, etc. Moreover, with both my parents being musicians along with myself , there was a quality and richness in our conversations I'll never forget. This depth and expertise served him well in broadcasting as evident by all the awards he received over the course of his career.

Please hold the memories of Sammy near and dear to you hearts . . . as I will. Let these guide you through life moving forward.

Thoughts and Prayers,

Kevin Kelliher

I first met Sam more than 35 years ago when we were very young & green radio reporters in Connecticut. What a terrific newsman -- a real pro -- and just an all-around decent guy. It should be noted that he won all kinds of broadcasting awards, especially from the Associated Press. It should also be noted that he became something of an authority on the submarine business during his years at WSUB, Groton. I hope his family can find some peace.

To Lisa,Kathy, to your families and to all the Gingerella family: Sam was my good friend for over 50 years and I will miss him. Though we were separated geographically we were in touch with each other regularly. In our younger days we had quite a few adventures together back in Westerly and we played a lot of basketball together. We shared a love of music. My parents were fond of Sam, and my father was actually proud of him when he heard him on the radio as WERI was on the radio all day in his barber shop in Pawcatuck. In recent years I came to a fuller appreciation and admiration for the fortitude and courage he consistently displayed in the face of all the challenges he endured regarding his health. He NEVER complained about any of it, and he never let any of it get him down...never. His approach was to be sure he understood fully what he needed to do to thrive and he perservered in spite of all of it. Sam never quit living life to the fullest extent possible. I can still hear Sam laughing. To those of us who were his buddies, Sam was affectionately known as "The Owl". I feel his loss to my core. It was my great privelege to have had such a good friend as Sam for as long as I did. Rest in peace good buddy. You were a good natured warrior and you fought the good fight right to the end. My best wishes and sincere sympathy to all the family.
