Aaron Slade Obituary

Aaron Slade made his mark on all he knew in the short time he was here, and left this world too soon on October 18 at the age of 38. He will forever be cherished by the loved ones he left behind, and never forgotten by those who were lucky enough to call him a friend. Born and raised in Eureka, Aaron attended Grant Elementary School, Winship Junior High and graduated with Eureka High School's Class of 1990. He also attended College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University, where he studied the two subjects that he loved- math and science. The past few years Aaron had been living in Redding and Woodland, where he worked in the Grocery and Construction industries. Behind Aaron's easy smile and quick-wit, was an intelligent, thoughtful man whose multiple interests were fueled by strong convictions and an avid appetite for learning. Starting at a very young age and continuing throughout his life, Aaron loved to read; whether it was a National Geographic magazine he would read cover-to-cover; or his favorite book series- The Lord of the Rings- which he read multiple times (including four more times just last year. ) In his youth, Aaron liked BMX bike racing and playing on his Mercer Fraser little league team with his favorite coaches Dale DelGrande and Kenny Britt. At the age of 12, Aaron decided to try a new hobby- playing guitar. Knowing his capability of learning anything he put his mind to, his parents bought him his first JC Penney's-issued guitar. Aaron taught himself how to play it, saved his money, studied Jimi Hendrix, and bought his own electric guitar the very next year. Many years, and guitars, later- he still loved to play. A self-taught Cook as well, Aaron also indulged in another hobby he was passionate about- fishing. A catch & release fisherman through-and-through, Aaron loved the sport and fished his favorite spots as often as he could. Aaron is preceded in death by his Gram Rita and Papa Art Slade, his Grandma Allegra, dog Jake, and best fishing buddy A.J. Milton. He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Slade, and his brother Tony Slade. Being 12 years older than Tony, Aaron was like another parent, always worrying about him. He is also survived by his Grandpa Jack Schmale; his Aunts and Uncles Judy Malfatti, Bill Schmale, Sandy Hendricks and husband Dave, and Jerry Avila and wife Leslie; and his cousins Scott Avila and family, Kim Mullins and family, Jamie Biagi and Family, Roberta Rushka and family, Laurie Fano and Family and Michael Schmale. He would also want mentioned best friends Brian Bigham, Jason Benhote, Hugo Romero and Erik George, as well as all of the other caring friends and family who were a part of his life. A special thank you to Dr. Robert LaClair and Dr. Sheldon Meshulam, as well as all of the wonderful doctors and nurses who work in St. Joseph Hospital's Intensive Care Unit. A celebration of Aaron's life will take place Saturday, October 23 from 1-4 p.m. at 5178 Windfall Lane, Mckinleyville, Calif. Please call (707) 601-3213 or (707) 839-8664 for directions. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Aaron's honor. "Fish on!" Aaron. You will be missed. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Linda, Jim and Tony,

I was so saddened when my son, Kevin Johnson, emailed me about Aaron's passing. It seems like just yesterday that the boys were running around Grant School and the sidewalks and woods in our neighborhood.

My deepest condolences to you and each of Aaron's family members and friends. You are in my prayers and thoughts. May God's peace reign in your lives now and in the days to come.

We went to kindergarten together, we lived around the corner from each other for 15 years. We listed to Motorhead, Venom, and Metallica in his room on Manzanita and H streets for hours on end. Aaron was generous and he treated me like a friend.
I haven't seen or spoken to Aaron for many years but there wasn't a single time that I drove by his old place that I didn't wonder where he was or what he was up to.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and Linda.
Rest well Aaron.

Hearing of Aaron's passing brought much sadness to me. Aaron played Little League baseball for me on Mercer Frasier. Aaron was a very good baseball player and even a better person. Over the years I would run into him at Murphy's Market in Cutten. He would come out of the butcher shop and we would talk baseball, and of course, fishing, which he loved. He always had that smile. I had not seen Aaron for a few years, but when I saw Jim I would ask about Aaron. This is a big shock. I have all great memories of Him. I will miss Him a lot. God Bless You Jim, Linda and Tony.

Aaron was one of my closest friends in junior high and high school. He influenced my interest in playing guitar, which is an important part of my life even today. I still chuckle to myself when I remember how excited we both were to finally learn Stairway to Heaven.
One thing about Aaron that defines him in my mind was that Aaron lived by his own rules. He wasn't afraid to take risks and take charge in most situations. This sometimes led us to places we shouldn't have been, but more often led us to places we never thought we'd be. Those adventures made for memories that last a lifetime, experiences that make a lifetime.
Aaron always had the courage to stand up for himself and those that were close to him. I have no doubt he was brave until the very end.
I cherished his friendship, but have faith he is in a better place now. Thanks for the memories, Aaron

I remember the very day my best friend and your dear cousin Kim informed me that you were no longer going by "Binky" -that it's "Aaron" now. It had to be around 7th grade. Boy that took a long time to stick for me, and I also remember the look on your face when I would slip and call you Binky in front of people on accident!

I know you now can see how loved you were, and I know you are free. You left a mark on all of us, Bink, and will never, ever be forgotten. Rest in sweet peace friend.

October 21, 2010

Jim, Linda and Tony,
I have been stunned by this tragic news. The memories of Aaron and Cory and AJ and Hugo as those inseparable buddies at Grant Elementary are flooding back. My heart is aching for you as only you can imagine. Cory still fishes at least weekly; he will now have his first fishing buddy looking out for him. My deep and heartfelt sympathy to you. Bink, I can not even believe that I am reading your obituary. This is all just so unreal. I know everyone says that you are in a better place and I know it is true, yet it seems like the "better" place would be here with your family.
I hope you can see all of the people who loved you and who are mourning you. I will NEVER forget you. I know that someday I will see you again. I love you Aaron.....see you soon, your cousin, Kim.
