Alice Souza

1925 - 2018

ALICE (SOUSA) SOUZA Alice (Sousa) Souza was born June 7, 1925 in Ferndale, CA and passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 93 on June 28, 2018 at her home in Fortuna. She was born and raised on the family dairy on Sage Road in Ferndale. She married on July 21, 1946 to Frank Souza of Arcata. She helped on the dairy most of her life, along with growing a large vegetable garden, which she was very proud of, in addition to her flowers which she would weed on a daily basis; the weeds were afraid to come up when they would see her approach. In addition to raising eight daughters, she babysat most of the little ones on Grizzly Bluff and Waddington Roads. In 1941 she was chosen Portuguese Queen in Ferndale and later honored in the 75th anniversary in marching with the Past Queens. One of her greatest pleasures was to be honored for Mother's Day at the Ferndale Museum's Mother's Day Memories in 2017. Her great-grandson Joey Quen made her favorite blackberry pie. She is preceded in death by her husband Frank Souza, parents John & Emilia Sousa; brothers Frank, John, Joe and Manuel Sousa; and sisters Marie Souza and Gert Zamarripa; and son-in-law David Blachly. Alice is survived by her eight daughters Shirley (Dale) Cooley, Sharon (Mel) Thomsen, Judy (Rich) Olesen, Jeanette (John) Van Dusan, Linda Sherwood, Irene Blachly, Mary (Glen) Hubner and Kathy (Shayne) Monroe; grandchildren Rick (Kim) Cooley of Carson City, Nevada, D'Anna (Joe) Quen of Fortuna, Kevin (Jeana) McClendon of Hydesville, Stacey Bywater of Fortuna, Tina (Bryan) Freeman of Westlynn, Oregon, Deborah (Rene) Fonseca of Fortuna, Jessica (Kenny) Mendes of Kuna, Idaho, Jason Oliveria of Fortuna, Tim (Heather) Oliveria of Fortuna, Travis Sherwood of Eureka, David (Charris) Blachly of Fortuna, Jodie (Melissa) Blachly of Porterville, CA, Nikie (Melissa) Norwood of Fortuna, Glenda (Dustin) Corcoran of Sacramento, Shanda (Lance) Lewis of Sacramento; 26 great grandchildren, as well as may local cousins, nieces and nephews; her sister Evelyn Floyd of Santa Rosa, her brother-in-law Arnold (Bonnie) Souza of Arcata, and her God child David Souza of Arcata and God child Jim Souza of Willows, CA. The family would like to thank Dr. Olkin for his great concern for our mother and also Hospice of Humboldt for their outstanding care and comfort for our mom, they were there whenever we had a question or need, and the special care-givers Carol Kriesling, Lexie Spaulding, Kathy, Judy, Linda and Sharon, along with her nurse Halona Rude, the wonderful Hospice Social Worker Hilary Finch, and our dedicated Chaplain P.J.. Also a sincere thank you to Fr. Manuel Chavez for your thoughts and prayers. Services will be held at Goble's Mortuary in Fortuna, 560 12th St, Fortuna, Ca. on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 11:00 am, with viewing on Friday July 6th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. (No Rosary to be held). Private family interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Ferndale, CA. A reception will follow at the Ferndale VFW Hall, 1100 Main Street, Ferndale.
