Benjamin Curtis "Curt" Spinas

Benjamin Spinas Obituary

8/31/24-6/15/11 Benjamin Curtis "Curt" Spinas passed away peacefully June 15th after a long illness with his family at his side. He was 86. Curt was born and raised in Eureka and was a lifelong resident. He enjoyed the outdoors, sports and was a voracious reader. As a fly-fisherman he was an artist however basketball was his passion. He played it as a youth, at Eureka High and at HSU. After college, he continued playing in the local men's recreational night league until he was 75 years old. Curt was a successful used car salesman for 35 years. He enjoyed working for Harvey Harper at Harper Motors for twenty nine years. He especially liked test driving all those new Mustangs. After retiring from sales, he began his own business: Curt's Home Repair. As his friends and family will attest, Curt was full of life and energy. He loved a well delivered joke, witty repartee, and a finely prepared meal. He was a good teacher and coach to his children and delighted in their success as student athletes. Big Band Music made him dance and sing. Curt enjoyed gardening and painting with oils. He often reminisced of his ten year annual salmon fishing trip to the Klamath with his pals. Curt loved his family. After "retiring" from basketball, he became an enthusiastic walker. He took great pleasure in walking all over Eureka... Visiting old haunts he remembered as a young boy of just seeing how the city had changed over the years. A veteran of WWII, Curt served honorably in Europe in the U.S. Army. Julie and Family-
I was sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He was an incredibly warm man. I remember as a young girl watching him play basketball with my dad. My dad eventually stopped playing, but your dad just went on and on.
Much love.

Jean, Brad, Sande, Julie & Rich - We were so sad to learn of Curt's passing. He was such a kind and fun-loving man. We loved knowing he was taking care of our grandmother's "fix-its" while they enjoyed being neighbors. We miss those years. Our deepest condolences to all of your families.

Our thoughts are with the Spinas Family and we send our condolences. Being of an earlier generation of cousins (my grandfather Johann - John Dolf was the brother of Margreth - Margaret Dolf Spinas), I do not remember meeting Curt while I was a young man but I do remember hearing many good things about Curt from my parents (Tom & Juanita Dolf) over the years and I know they would appreciate my writing a note on their behalf. Rest well!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Spinas Family in this time of loss. I wanted to share that your father, amongst his many other personal qualities and interests, will certainly be remembered as one of only a very few icons of Northcoast basketball history. I remember participating in both high school varsity basketball games 1970s when your dad was a referee, and in later years when I participated in city league basketball games, and it seemed that your dad would always be around the game. He was the type of man who earned the respect of many younger players, because he would be out there on the court hustling after loose balls, diving to keep a ball in play, and in general just embarrassing the heck out of we "40+/- years" younger players! And boy, he could really use his body positioning and strength when under the basket, and he sent many younger guys (like myself) flying into the stands! And he would do this with an innocent look on his face. We used to call your dad "Mr. Basketball", out of respect. And in all sincerety, many of the Eureka city night-league basketball players from that time period really disliked playing against your dad. It was because he would never slow down or relax while he was on the court! We wanted to simply coast up and down the floor and shoot jumpshots, but if we didn't put a defensive player one-on-one with your dad at all times, he would "cherry-pick" us for lay-up baskets all night long! I wanted to share a few memories of the impact your father had on many, many young players some 30+ years ago. He made the game of basketball mean something, he made it worth playing hard for, and perhaps, he made the game a reflection of what our futures had in store for us. If we wanted to make life worth living, then we need to play hard, all the way through!
