Dorothy Sundstrom Obituary

Dorothy Pauling Sundstrom Dorothy Pauling Sundstrom passed away in Sacramento on May 15 after a long and heroic struggle with Atypical Parkinson's Syndrome. Born in Boston, Mass. on 28 July 1935, Dot was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Hearne and Verona Kobe Hearne. Dot attended public schools in Melrose, Mass. and graduated from Skidmore College with a B.S. In Biology. Dot was much-loved as a wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She is survived by Roy Sundstrom, her husband of 51 years, her daughters Cynthia Neugebauer (William) and Jill Caplan (James), her grandchildren Shannon, Allison, Odin and Kira. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Franchi and her brothers Thomas, Peter and David Hearne. Dot spent her career as a medical technologist at Harvard Medical School, Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company and the Eureka Family Practice. Her real loves, however, were family and children. It was this love of children that led her to serve on the City of Arcata's Recreation Commission for 27 years. She was especially proud of her contribution in bringing new recreational facilities to the city. Dot also loved music. In this regard she spent many happy years performing with the Bells of the Redwoods and with "The Babes" singing group. A memorial is planned for the fall at the Methodist Church in Arcata. Dot was a wonderful person. Her daughter Jill and my son Jeff used to play together as kids in Arcata. The world was a better place because of Dot.

Sorry to learn of Dot's passing. I enjoyed her company, whether in a social group or one-to-one. Her friendliness was highlighted with thoughtfulness and humor. Her love for her family was always in evidence. May her joyous spirit continue to console you in her absence.

My sincerest sympathy to you all; Dot was a very special person, and I considered her a dear friend, though we weren't in touch much during the past 20 years. During the 80's she was my daughter's GS leader, so we became friends, along with my daughter and her daughters. She had such a wonderful personality, and she could always be counted on to be friendly and kind. I know she was a fine mother and wife, and will be greatly missed.

We are so sorry for your loss. Dot made our neighborhood special. She spent her last years in her dream spot. Close to her girls. Much love, Jed and Jeannie
