Dear Meryl and family -
We are sad to learn of George's passing.
George was always ready to lend a helping hand to those who needed it.
I remember George and the rest of the family as one of friendly neighbors when we moved in up the street from your Victorian. Even to this day, I refer to the house as "the Jewells' old house".
Halloween and Christmas were very special times of the year. Your house was in keeping with the spirit of the times. On Halloween there were cobwebs, ghosts, pumpkins, and other stuff, that was really cool.
Christmas time - a snowman and lots of lights.
George was always considered a "fatherly figure" to me,(Tauren) growing up here on 6th St. We had many conversations about George's love for fishing. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Thanks for all the great memories, George. You were truly an inspiration to both of us.
May God bless you, George, and your family - and hold you in His arms forever.
Your neighbors,
Carole and Tauren Kuzan

Dear Meryl and Family:

I was saddened to learn of George's recent passing. I have many fond memories of my friendship and acquaintance with him over the years. He and your family were great neighbors of ours in Fortuna for many years, and I remember spending a great deal of time with him in my pre-teen years growing up across the street from your home. I do hope that you and George enjoyed your life and home in Idaho these past few years. Many of us missed you in Fortuna and missed George's wonderful fishing column in the Humboldt Beacon.

Please accept my deepst and most sincere sympathy with his loss, and please extend my condolences to your sons, Scott and Georgie and their families.

Sincerely,

Louis (David) Bucher

Meryl, Georgie, Scott and Families,
So sorry to read in the TS about George's going on before us. I think we dated back to the not so big Red S on 11th St. in the fifties. His cheery voice and his willingness to service customers is an attitude of the past, not in existance today. I still think of you when I drive by the Big House that was home for so many years. I'm still home in the Old Brown House???!!!
May God comfort you in your loss, sustain you in your grief, and give you JOY in your memories!!!
Love and Prayers, Dorie Do II

Meryl,George,Scotty
I was so sad to hear that George had passed away. Growing up in the same neighborhood he was like a father to me. I loved to visit him and you Meryl. When I got married and would go into Safeway I would always look for him. He always gave me help picking out my fruit. Also we would reminisce about the old days. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Meryl,

I was so sorry to read of George's passing. You were such a good team. The fantastic job the two of you did restoring that huge Victorian in Fortuna was a shining example of the cooperative, supportive marriage you had together. Every comment you made about George in all the years you and I worked together told me how much you loved him.

My heart goes out to you.

,My deepest sincere condolences go to all of the Jewell family.
I met George in 1971 when I started working for Safeway in Fortuna. He was the produce manager and I was his new helper. We both shared the same interests in fishing and hunting and that passion never diminished over the next 33 years. We were jokingly referred to as the siamese duck hunters attached at the hip.
George experienced life with a level and zest most of us don't reach, and his enthuiasm would rub off onto you if you got too close. We duck hunted together at Tule Lake,Goose lake and locally,George was a walking encyclopia of knowledge and experience and I loved asking him for advice. In Nov.2002 George asked me to join SCOP (senior citizens on patrol) and I accepted the offer. For the next 6 1/2 years George and I were devoted to helping protect Fortuna's citizens-rain or shine. He truly loved Fortuna.
It has been an honor knowing George as a fellow Safeway employee, but most important as a wonderful friend and companion. You will continue to be remembered in our hearts and our memories.
