Jerry Chapman Obituary

February 19, 1934 - April 26, 2011 Jerry W. Chapman was born in Eureka on February 19, 1934 and died at home of pancreatic cancer on April 26, 2011 with his wife Barbara and son Kent by his side. Jerry was proud to be known as a Humboldt County native. Before graduating from Humboldt State University, he served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Korea from 1954-1956. He was a member of the Humboldt Association of Realtors, served as president during 1976 and was voted Realtor of the Year in 1977. During his years as a realtor/appraiser, he owned Landmark Realty Co., and was founder/partner of Rainbow Self-Storage. He was a 30-year member of the Ingomar Club and a life-time member of the Masonic Arcata Lodge No. 106. He served for 20 years on the Board of Directors for Humboldt County Blood Bank and was a 16+ gallon donor. He was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Ruth Chapman. He is survived by his wife Barbara and son, Kent (Karina); sister Jane Foster; step-daughter Linnea Yates and her family, granddaughters Madalyn and Karalyn Chapman; nephews Dan Flockhart (Tiffany); Michael Flockhart (Lynett); Doug Flockhart (Janet); and cousin Irene Thomas. His first passion was outdoor activities, especially deer hunting with his friends at Bridgeville. His second passion was traveling to Maine to spoil his two granddaughters. We would like to thank Dr. Michael Fratkin and the wonderful people at Hospice of Humboldt, and special thanks go to Richard Hunt, Jerry's best friend for 77 years, and to his wife, Carolyn, for their dedicated assistance during Jerry's illness. A memorial gathering for Jerry will be held at the Wharfinger Building, Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Humboldt or the Humboldt County Blood Bank. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Barbara we are sorry for your loss. We always heard the stories of Papa and Momom from the Karina and or the girls. I have some family fotos of him with the girls, especially Maddy since she is older.
I remember when Madalyn was born, I stopped at his office on I street to see him and I told him “since I have grandchildren would you rather see your new granddaughter on her birth date or after she is born?” His reply, “Yes”
So we went a week after Maddy was born and agreed to his, yes.

If we can ever help in any way, call us.

To the Chapman Family: I am so sorry for your loss. I never got to know Jerry well, but Kent and Karina would always be telling me what "Papa" was up to. One thing I will always remember, is that whenever I was invited to visit for a picnic/party, etc, both Barbara and Jerry treated me like I was a member of the family. Jerry had such a love for life. He will definitely be missed. I wish I could have gotten to know him better.

Dear Barbara and Family,
We are sorry for the loss of Jerry. Our hearts go out to all of you and hope that you are taking solace in the many fond memories you must have. We knew Jerry as "our neighbor up the hill" and the kind of guy who always waved & smiled, slowed down for Wanda, and stopped to chat from time to time. We’ll miss him and hope to be available should you need help of any kind.
Warmest regards, Terri, Bryan, Wanda and Huxley – Hartman Lane neighbors

Dear Barbara and family

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers at the Northern California Community Blood Bank, our deepest sympathy to you. Jerry was such a strong supporter of the community and the patients we serve and was a dedicated and committed blood donor and volunteer member of the board of directors. He had a sharp wit and brought vigorous debate to the board. His willingness to "walk the talk" and give blood as well as advocate for voluntary blood donations for the patients we serve, was an inspiration to all of us. He saved countless lives with his generous gifts and he will be remembered by us all.

With our great respect
Tom Schallert, Administrator, NCCBB
