I first met Joan about 5 years ago when she came into my HSU OLLI Tai Chi class as an eager student. It wasn't long, however, before the roles reversed somewhat, and she became my teacher, and I the student..... the student of how to live a life gracefully, bravely, and with strength, humor, and love. She was a living example of all of that and more, and I soon became a "fan" of Joan Pierson, simply out of observing how she conducted herself, in the classroom, and in life in general. She was spunky, sparky, funny, smart, and just as cute as the red volkswagen she was driving in those days. Her wit sparkled in the classroom, and her "thumbs-up" attitude towards life, no matter what adversity, was so inspirational that it brought tears to my eyes more than once. When I visited her in the last weeks of her life, she told jokes to make me laugh, and shared her latest lessons, learning "patience", among many other things. She never quit growing and learning during her time here on earth and I have so much admiration of her for that. I really loved her, and I will miss her forever. She brought so much to all of us.

I was a student of Joan's at Humboldt in the late 70's. She has always had a special place in my heart. Even though we have not kept in contact, I thought of her often. My prayers are with the family

I,too, was a student of Joan's in the early 70's. I am grateful that our friendship continued all these years. She was a loving and inspiring woman. The many tributes on this page attest to her delightful personality. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

My dad, Dave Coe, and his sisters loved to tell us stories about the adventures they had with their cousins, Jean, Joan and Janet, when they were children. Though I didn't get to see them much when I was growing up, I felt like I knew them well from those stories. I was so happy that Joan was able to attend the Wiest reunion in 2007 and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her again. She was an amazing person!

Each of the previous entries "hit the nail on the head". As a former student, I shall always be grateful for Joan's guidance and example. I am proud to call her "friend". She is indeed a "portrait of a lady".

I will always remember and cherish the times our family spent with Aunt Joan, Uncle Ed and our cousins. I have especially fond memories of one summer in Corvallis when we had great times together. She always remembered my birthday and I looked forward to her letters. I am very thankful we were able to attend the 50th anniverary dinner and become reacquainted with her family. I loved Aunt Joan and will miss her. Love, Jenny and Dallas Brickhouse

I was a student of Mrs. Pierson's in the mid 70s and remember her fondly. Her classes were enjoyable and she was a delight as a professinal I am still making some of the recipes we learned in her class. She also helped me with my graduate thesis.

What wonderful memories I have of our trips out to California to visit with the Piersons. I will always remember Aunt Joan's wonderful smile, her fondness for playing cards (a fishing deck I still cherish), heirloom raspberries from our grandparents farm, the redwood saplings she gave our girls, and all the time she spent sharing her memories of my mother with me. Our love and condolences to the Pierson family and all of those who were touched by her in their lives, I know that there are many. With much love,

What a beautiful letter describing your mother's talented, loving life. How someone can be so career driven and loved by her students and still find the time to be such a caring, loving wife and mother. She was my teacher as I majored in Home Economics at Humboldt, yet she felt like far more than that to me. She was an advisor, friend and like a loving, second Mom. I'm sure you know your Mom and Dad raised a beautiful & loving family. That has been so evident to both Rich and I. No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. We know you all pulled together for her toward the end. We're sure you're grieving, yet please remember to feel blessed to have had Joan as your special, loving Mom.
Our love to the Pierson Family,

Mrs. Pierson was such a lovely lady and we appreciated her attendance the Annual Spring Banquet to award the Edwin Pierson Forestry Scholarship. She was such a hit with the students. The students would be circled around her and have such a good time talking to her. She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Pierson was by far the most inspirational and memorable professor I had at HSU, and it was because of her encouragement and support that I went on to have a successful career in the food industry. Thanks to her, I'm proud to hold a degree in Home Economics. To this day, I utilize her teachings daily. And, never will I sit down to eat without putting water in those dirty pots! She was so wise, so informed, and so understanding with all of her students. I am so glad that my husband Tom (also a former student for non-majors, and a graduate of the pop-over unit) and I have kept in touch with her each and every Christmas since we graduated in 1976. Mrs. P. was a remarkable person who has left footprints in so many hearts. My thoughts are with her family, of who she was so proud, as they face the days ahead. Hold on to those very special memories...

To the Pierson Family. Aunt Joan was a wonderful person, and I admired her intelligence, caring, wonderful attitude toward life and people, and her humor. She's been a part of my life for more than 60 years, and I will miss her dearly. I will always treasure the photo of her holding me in her lap when I was 18 months old. Her life positively affected many people, and she left behind a wonderful family. God bless all of the Piersons. Love,

Thank you to the family of Joan who sent the letter describing Joan's beautiful life. After my parents, Joan had more influence on my life than any other factor. I was a 4-H girl in Klamath county when Joan was the Extension Agent there. She guided me into reaping great rewards from the 4-H program including representing Oregon at the National 4-H camp in Washington, D.C. In her footsteps I entered Oregon State and joined the Chi Omega sorority. I graduated OSC in 1954 in Home Economics. I last visited Joan at her home in Arcata about 12 years ago and we have kept in touch through Christmas cards.
I am wondering if this beautiful obituary was sent to the Klamath Falls Herald and News. Although it was many years ago that Joan served the farming community there, I am thinking many would remember her because she was deeply admired.

Joan had so much creative energy. Besides everything mentioned above, one of her greatest achievements was her beautiful family. Her friends will miss her, but never forget.

I first met Joan and her new daughter, Candy, when Candy and I were two years old. My father, Frank Wood, was a foreign language professor at Humboldt, and the Wood and Pierson families became dearest friends. I arrived in Arcata this past Saturday to visit my mother, Ann Wood, and with the hope that I could say goodbye to Joan in person. She was gone by the time I arrived. And so, Joan, I want to say these words to you again, words I expressed to you recently on the phone: what a delight it was for me to grow up and see you through adult eyes. Sometimes the adults you admire or adore as a child turn out to be, well, not so impressive when viewed with greater maturity and wisdom. But you, Joan, were just what I thought you would be. No wonder you were my beloved mother's best friend. I would choose you to be her best friend. And if I were closer in age to you, I would be delighted and honored to have you as my best friend, too. I always loved you, Joan. I was going to say, "Rest in Peace." But I think "Venture On!" is best for you...Jenny Wood (Mill Valley, CA)

It has been our pleasure to be next-door neighbors with Ed and Joan Pierson for almost 20 years. Joan was one of the happiest, most thoughtful, and most likable people I have ever met . She always had a smile and a treat for our two small boys who loved her so much (they called her 'Grandma Joan'). Roberts Way will not be the same without our beloved Grandma Joan. Condolences to the family who obviously loved her very much.

To Mrs. Pierson's Family I send my heatfelt condolences. Mrs. Pierson was my most favorite Home Ec instructor and advisor back in the 70s. To this day I use so much of her valuable teachings. She was just a wonderful person and we are all lucky to have had her in our lives.

To the family of Joan Pierson: I am sorry to read of Joan's death. I worked with and remember her when she was at KIEM Television because I worked at KIEM/KRED Radio at the other end of the block, also for Mr. Smullin. My condolences to all and know that I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

My name is Dick Johnson. I never had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Pierson, but Her late husband, Ed, was one of my forestry profs back in the '50's. Their son, Cam, is a friend and I wish to add my condolences to the family. I am currently wheelchair bound, so I won't see Cam at the store for awhile. Again, my condolences.
