Virginia Fosdick Obituary

Virginia May Fosdick May 19, 1927 - September 28, 2013 Mom was born on May 19, 1927 at her grandparent's home in Kentucky and passed away at home in Eureka with her daughter by her side. Mom was the third of four children. When she was seven years old, her mother died and for the next two years she bounced between relatives and an orphanage before moving to her Aunt Pearl's farm. As a young girl, she collected eggs for her aunt to sell and helped Uncle Charles build cardboard walls in their home. As she got older, she worked part time at the grocery and laundromat in town. At age 16 she moved into town to her cousin's house, which was across the street from the Fosdick family. She met and married our dad while he was home on leave in 1944. She moved to California the next year to join Homer in Humboldt County where he was stationed. Mom always worked, whether at a store or taking in laundry and ironing or taking care of children. At age 27, she started working for the U.S. Postal Service as a window clerk; first at the H Street Federal Building and later at the Clark Street office. Although she retired from there in 1986, for years people would come up to her remembering her from the post office. She spent her retirement enjoying her grandchildren, gardening in her yard, going to farmer's markets and taking care of her many pets, most of which found their way to her. She lived on the same block for over 60 years and was known for feeding all the neighborhood cats. She was a very king and compassionate person and will be greatly missed. Mom was preceded in death by her husband Homer and by all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter Janet (Alan) Miller; sons Robert, Homer (Sherri) and Donald Fosdick. She also leaves behind her granddaughters Kimberly (Daniel) Baeza, Roberta (Joey) Fosdick and Abigail (Max) Fosdick; great-grandchildren Justin, Bree and Danica Baeza, Alexis, Luca and Emily Green and close friend Ginger Tremblay. Graveside services for family and close friends will be at Ocean View Cemetery on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the care of Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka. Contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Humboldt or the Humboldt Co. Animal Shelter. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com

Virginia was a very special lady. When I first started working at the Eureka Post Office there were very few women employees. Virginia and three other ladies took me under their wings. They made me feel welcome and part of the "family". Virginia meant a lot to many people. When ever we ran into each other, usually at Winco, we would always have to catch up. Going to miss you dear lady.
Kimberly, your story about your grandma was very touching. Sharon Colburn, Hydesville CA

I had the best grandma a person could ask for. She took care of me and my sister every vacation break from school. I loved just being with her. When my sister and I were kids we tried to come up with the biggest number to tell grandma how much we loved her....we would say "we love you more than a million and nine". Grandma would always tell us that whenever we were saying goodbye and she always signed it in cards. When I was kid I would listen for hours to her stories of old times about her life growing up, stories of my grandpa, and of my dad, aunt and uncles. Sometimes a thought would come to her mind about my cousins, Marc and Chad. She loved and missed them. When I was 17, I moved in with her and moved in and out several times in the next 10 years. Every summer after, I would come stay with grandma for a few weeks. I'm so glad I had that time with her. This summer she wagged her finger at me and said she is making a rule and there is no crying allowed. Sorry grandma but I've broken that rule. I will carry your love and memories every day. I love you more than a million nine.
