Paul Manghi Obituary

EAST MONTPELIER – Paul K. Manghi of East Montpelier, Vt., passed away on Feb. 3 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare. He was 63 years old.

Paul was born on June 8, 1946, in New Brunswick, N.J., to Gene and Alice (Miller) Manghi. Paul's father's army career led the family to Germany and Georgia before settling in Northfield where his father was stationed at Norwich University. After each move, the family would travel back to their roots in the NYC area to reunite with loved ones. Paul's Italian and German heritage led him to develop a deep love of family and family traditions revolving around food and winemaking.

Paul graduated from Northfield High School and then The Maryknoll Seminary in Glenn Ellen, Ill., with a B.A. in philosophy and religion, after which Paul enlisted in the army. It was during the years of his education that Paul had an inspirational group of friends of which Elaine Thomas was a part.

Paul and Elaine were married June 28, 1969, in Northfield. Paul served a year in Vietnam as an advisor for regional and popular forces. Upon his return, he obtained his master's degree in special education at Syracuse University. He worked in special education in St. Albans and then for Washington County Mental Health in Randolph. Paul and Elaine's family was completed with the arrival of Maria in 1974 and Matthew in 1976.

Their first home in rural North Randolph was the perfect backdrop for Paul to begin to raise and grow much of the family's food. In 1980 they moved to Montpelier, where Paul joined Elaine in expanding a small but very successful home bread-baking business. The community embraced the whole-grain breads and their Christ Church family offered kitchen space to meet the need. In less than a year, the bakery had outgrown both the church and a second location off Main Street, and 29 years ago they settled into the bakery's current "home" at 28 School Street. Here Paul found his true vocation providing good food, friendship, and a quiet and kind presence to all he came into contact with.

After 16 years in Montpelier they found their third "dream home," an 1840's farmhouse at the end of a dirt road in East Montpelier. The tranquil setting, simple beauty of the land and warm neighbors were a joy to Paul.

Paul put his heart and soul into everything he did. His magnificent garden gave a wealth of produce, which he generously shared with all. He was the consummate craftsman, learning old techniques to meet present needs. His post and beam shed was built patiently over three years, using only hand-tools. His winemaking was both a family tradition and a form of creative expression. His interests ranged from fishing, following the Montreal Canadiens hockey team, and constantly reading and learning. But his favorite recent topic was his grandchildren. He was known to say, "Let me tell you about my grandchildren. Do you have an hour?"

Paul Manghi leaves a legacy of faith, wisdom, community spirit, hospitality and generosity to all those who were touched by him.

Paul is survived by his wife and friend of 41 years, Elaine (Thomas) Manghi; son Matthew Manghi of Burlington; daughter Maria (Manghi) Stoufer and her husband, Steve Stoufer of East Montpelier; grandchildren Hazen and Stella Stoufer of East Montpelier; mother, Alice (Miller) Manghi of Northfield; brother Gene Manghi and his wife Bernie of N.J.; sister Maria (Manghi) Aronson and her husband Doug of Ore.; and a large extended family, and many beloved high school and college friends. Paul was predeceased by his father, Gene Manghi, and brothers Mark Manghi and Michael Manghi.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Montpelier Elementary School, 665 Vincent Flats Road, East Montpelier, VT 05651 or the Vermont Heart Association, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Not sure what to say?

Maria & Family,
I just heard about the passing of Paul. I am so very sorry for your loss and know that there is not much one can say at a time like this that will make you feel better. Hold on to the memories of him very close. His love will live on in you for eternity.

Dear Elaine, Maria & Matt,

I'm so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I always enjoyed seeing Paul's smile in the mornings, back when we were Ridge St. neighbors, you were just starting up the bakery in your kitchen, and I was doing the Waterbury bread runs.

Paul will be missed. My thoughts are with you!

Bill and Marion Green

February 12, 2010

Dear Elaine,

Marion and I were deeply saddened to hear of Paul's passing; what a shock, and loss.

While time and distance has separated us all, we remember all the good times together.

I remember in Mrs. Sargent's English class where we had to read MacBeth, and reading that 'life is but a walking shadow, and then is heard no more'. In Paul's case, he will be heard and remembered, as he will live in our memories and in our hearts.

Sincerely hope that you will find peace through the loss of your husband and friend, and this difficult part of life. Perhaps through the love and support of family and friends you will move forward.

February 12, 2010

Dear Elaine, Matt and Maria,
I was very sad to hear about Paul's sudden and unexpected departure. He was such wonderful man and neighbor.
I will never forget the welcome you all extended to me and my family when we became your neighbors more than twenty years ago.
I like to offer my heartfelt condolences to you. Paul will be greatly missed.
Sincerely, Johannes Otter

Dear Elaine, Maria and Matt,

I am stunned by the sudden loss of Paul... what a wonderful man, what a wonderful family. I can only imagine your pain and loss, Elaine, after so many years together... my heart goes out to you. Paul will live forever in our memories as the sort of person it is a privilege to know.

Peace to you all, Michelle, Sophie and Stella

February 11, 2010

Dear Elaine and Family,
We are so saddened by your sudden loss of Paul. He gave us the kind, quiet stuff of your bread while, Elaine, you gave us the sweet toppings.
In his weekly stop for sandwich bread, Steve forced himself to go through the doors of your bakery last week with Paul's apron (so appropriate)tacked to the outside door. He knew there would be a large and tall empty space where Paul used to move in the background. Yet Steve needed to see you and express our sadness--and get his weekly bread. Somehow, we knew you'd all be there. We hope you find comfort in continuing to bake the bread that so many in this part of Vermont appreciate and count on.

We will miss seeing the two of you bicycle by our home this summer. Elaine, please wrap yourself in all the love and comfort of your family and friends.

Sending you our deepest sympathy,

Ann Marie Giroux and Steve Litkovitz (East Montpelier)

Elaine, Matt and Family,

I am so sad for your loss. I have fond memories as a kid of pulling fresh baked sticky-buns from trays, guided by Paul's soft voice. Whenever I walk by the bakery, I remember the good work done inside by Paul and family.

Sincerely,

Steve Stoufer

February 9, 2010

Paul was my father in law, my family, and perhaps most importantly, my friend. Although deeply, deeply saddened by the loss of his life, I have been forever enriched by knowing him. The value of any relationship seems to be best symbolized by how values and interests grow together and become more in tune. With that, I would say to the whole of my family here in Vermont, in Virginia, in New Jersey, and across the country, how fortunate I am to have all of your values from which to draw and learn from. In this most difficult time I am perhaps most comforted to know that I will continue to learn from you all and, from Paul. I am learning more and more everyday the importance of community, of humility, and of faith in others. Although Pauls presence will be sorely missed in all of our lives, his soul and his values will continue. His young grandchildren who met so very much to him have already learned much about life from him. Elaine, Maria, Mat, Alice, Gene, and Aunt Maria, please know that Paul will forever be with us. He has been and will always be an influence on our lives and the decisions we make. I am so very thankful to be a part of your lives and I am most thankful to have had you and Paul be a part of mine.
My mind, my heart, and my soul are with you all, peace.

February 8, 2010

Dear Manghi Family,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Paul- our world in Montpelier is a small one my brother Stafford lived above the bakery and through him we exchanged a christmas tree from our tree farm for bread we did this for several years. I also know through my own life that a small town can offer comfort and pain. I n my life the quote I recite in a time of need is this: COURAGE IS FEAR THAT HAS SAID HER PRAYERS. May your memories and love guide you in this time of loss.
sincerely,
Elizabeth Scoville-Kappel East Montpelier Vt

Dear Elaine and family,

My family and I send you our deepest condolences. In Yiddish, there is an expression of someone being a "Mensch". It means the best person you can be with a heart that is open and giving. Paul was such a person!

I enjoyed being around you both when I briefly worked in the bakery some 20 years ago.

I will always remember one time that you and Paul rescued me from a too long cross country ski in E. Montpelier where I ended too far away from my car and too tired to ski back.

All of us feel your loss.

With love,

Wendy Farber and family

Dear Elaine,
I feel so sad to hear of Paul's death. I haven't seen you for a number of years, but you and Paul were a wonderful, warm presence when I moved to 28 School Street with my two little girls. We needed the sweetness you offered, both in personal terms and in the practical form of bread and rolls. We were just talking about the two of you the other day, when my youngest turned 21, remembering the rolls for five cents.
I wish you courage in the difficult days ahead.

February 7, 2010

Dear Elaine,
As longtime customers of Manghi's, Emily and I were extremely saddened to hear of Paul's passing from life. Your bread is a staple in our lives.
Please accept our condolences to you, your family and the staff at Manghi's Bread.
With Sadness,

Dear Manghi Family, I do not know you and am not sure I ever had any of your breads, but I know your name just by working in Montpelier over 15 years.
From what I have read in these passages it appears that Montpelier has lost a great community leader and friend. It also sounds like Paul's life's teachings should be used as the dough/yeast starter for others.
My sincerest sympathies to all of you.

There are just no right words to say at a sad time like this. Our wonderful 28 School Street will always hold many fond memories for me and one niece in particular who was spoiled by having "MR. Pauls" round peasant bread every Friday.Knowing Paul & Elaine were always next door was a comforting thing for me, you both always made the days brighter! To you, Elaine; Maria, Matthew and Pauls parents my thoughts and prayers are with you. For you Paul my friend,God speed, you will be missed.

February 6, 2010

Dear Steven and Maria,

Cousin Don informed me by email of the untimely death of Maria's dad at too young of an age. My condolences are conveyed, as is my hope that you will accept the strength, that is unlimited from the Lord, in coping with this loss. Death is a profound experiance for we survivors, and there is absolutly nothing we, who are here on earth, can do to alleviate the trauma and gain immediate comfort. It simply takes time - which grinds on and on unrelentlessly.

I think that the Lord is the key, as He was in my case when my darling Ritty died. I hope you'll use Him to help you through your days of challenge and sadness.

Love

Dear Elaine and family: We are shocked and deeply saddened by Paul's death. We have been touched by Paul in so many ways: stopping in after school when the children were little for rolls; seeing you and Paul out at the Adamant theater; and, above all, by Paul's unfailingly kind and gentle presence. It is hard to imagine our neighborhood without him. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Carolyn, Jonathan, Ethan, and Seth

JAMES DYLAN RIVIS

February 6, 2010

Dear Elaine and family.
Bread is the staple of life, the foundation of our diet and an absolute delight to enjoy.Nothing exemplifies all that is good in life more than the smell of freshly baked breads.
The bakers of bread are, equally, at the heart of our community as they labor at their ancient craft while most of us are asleep.
Paul and Elaine's Manghi's Bakery laid the cornerstone for all the great artisan bakeries we now have available to us here in Central Vermont. To me,Paul exemplifies all those solid qualities which I miss so much from my childhood in Kirkbymoorside, Yorkshire. People like Paul work without a lot of fuss and noise, expressing only the occasional wry or well thought comment as did my cabinetmaker/joiner grandfather, our village cobbler, farrier, butcher, farmers and womenfolk. The labor in these essential crafts, especially in times gone by, is carried out with a reverence for the process of simple, hard, consistent manual work and it's just rewards.
Paul impressed me as being 'from another time', perhaps because this once small boy from a moorlands village counts the sound of the anvil, the handsaw, the smell of leather, fresh meat pies and fresh breads as being at the core of the best of his memories.
My sincere condolences.
