CRYSTAL LENNARTZ Obituary
Age 52, passed away suddenly, in her home, on Friday, November 28, 2014. She married Paul Lennartz on June 29, 1991. She is survived by her husband; two children, Nicole M. and Zachary P. Lennartz; parents, H. Lynn and Darlene Grove of Hollidaysburg, PA; a brother, Ty A. (Pam) Grove; two nieces, Brianna L. and Kelsey R. Grove of Crozet, VA, and a sister-in- law, Cheryl Ann (Anthony) Szymanski of Pittsburgh, PA. Crystal graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1980. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.A. in violin performance in 1984. She taught violin performance at CMU and the Pittsburgh Music Academy. She started the Crystal Strings Ensemble and played in several local symphony orchestras. She was a loving, wonderful mother, daughter, and wife. She was beloved by all her students as a generous and nurturing teacher and by her friends as a helpful, energetic spirit. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who loved her. Friends will be received Monday and Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at O'BRIEN'S, 3724 California at Cooper Aves., N. S. Funeral Mass in St. Rosalia Catholic Parish (Greenfield), Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Crystal's name may be made to Pittsburgh Music Academy.

Paul, Nicole, Zachary, Darlene and Lynn, I am so sorry to hear about Crystal's passing. I can't bear to believe it's true - I found out just a few days ago (October 2017). Crystal was my laughing partner, best ever roommate, most fun friend. I cannot think of Carnegie Mellon without thinking of her. (I am Rita Kronfeld from Minneapolis, Minnesota.) My dad thought the world of Crystal. My deepest sympathy to you all. I know some time has passed, but if you ever need anything at all, please let me know. My prayers are with you. Crystal once told me, many moons ago (an violin lesson in the 90's) that I was 'dauntless'. I have cherished her words and her relationship with me and carried her 'dauntless- energetic spirit' throughout my musical life and my personal life choices. I truly wish I had the chance to tell her in person how much she meant to me and how much she helped cultivate who I am today. When you're a little kid you have no idea how someone like Crystal can play such an important role in your life. She is the reason I'm still playing violin today, and teaching violin and performing(every chance I get..) She is the reason I'm still in love with music - I owe her a great deal. I can only imagine her friends and family already know what a sincere/warm/funny infectious personality she embodied. Thank you Crystal for your inspiration and support - I will cherish my fond memories of our time together, always... My deepest sympathies to Crystal's family.

I first met Crystal in the early 90's. She was kind enough to make room in her already "bursting at the seams" violin studio for a young, trumpet playing music teacher wishing to improve her violin skills in order to better connect with her orchestra students. What a true role model Crystal was for me then. Through the years that followed, she continued to uphold her unwavering reputation of never letting ANY person down who chose HER as teacher to help them further explore their passion and love of playing a string instrument. At my first lesson, I remember seeing a picture of her beautiful baby girl sitting in her Dad's trumpet case. She had it taped to the inside of her violin case and beamed when she looked at it. I laughed and said "what on earth???" to which Crystal responded... "Come on! Haven't you ever seen a baby in a gig bag before?" And we both burst out laughing. And that's the way I'll always remember this fantastic woman...playing beautiful music; loving her family; inspiring others and always doing so with the warmest smile and most feisty yet gentle spirit. So many people will miss her presence. And I'm so deeply sorry for your loss.

My daughter, Sadie, was a student of Miss Crystal for the past year at pma. Our hearts just ache for you. Our hearts ache for her....we will miss her. I had the chance to observe Crystal leading a Suzuki group class, and she was amazing--so imaginative, energetic, and responsive to the students. Whenever I knew I would share a stand with Crystal over the years, I looked forward to it as I knew I would have a good time, feel better about the music I made, and get to be around someone who had become an old friend.
