Lowell Hexum Obituary

Lowell Eugene Hexum passed away April 15, 2018 at Safe Harbor Assisted Living. Lowell was born in Hendricks, MN July 30, 1925 to Clara (Nelson) and Ole J. Hexum in a home behind the Methodist church. He was baptized August 16th, 1925 at Lutheran Free Church and was confirmed on June 2, 1940. He was raised with 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Arlen, Orris, Joyce and Clarice. Lowell graduated from Hendricks High School June 3, 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy July 28, 1943 and was honorably discharged on May 2, 1946. Lowell was an Electrician's Mate, Third Class on the USS LST 712 and fought in World War II. He was proud of his service. He married Joyce. B. Hexum on June 4, 1946 and they were married for 65 years. He went to SDSU for 2 years. He returned to Hendricks and worked as a carpenter, he then managed Swift & Co.'s produce station in Hendricks. Lowell held multiple positions throughout his career in Hendricks, Windom, & Heron Lake. He started working in Hendricks for the U.S. Postal Service in 1956 and retired in 1982 as Postmaster. Lowell was a jack of all trades and a perfectionist like his father. He raised his family of 5 children; Cheryl, Michael, Jeanne, Wanda & Wendy on an 80 acre farm SW of Hendricks raising crops and animals and lived with Joyce there for 42 years. He enjoyed farming and no one was ever a stranger at their home. Every cousin, child and grandchild have fond memories of fun times at the farm. Once retired they spent winters in Pharr, Texas for 17 years. In 2000, after living in Hendricks for 75 years and being a great member of the community, Lowell & Joyce moved to Longmont, Colorado. A true part of the greatest generation, Lowell led by example. He was a hard worker, a perfectionist with a great sense of humor, a contagious giggle, always helpful, proud & compassionate. He was a wonderful son, brother, friend, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He instilled in those around him a sense of purpose, commitment, loyalty, generosity and love. Lowell is survived by his daughter Wendy Conder and a large extended family. Funeral service 10:00 AM Friday April 20, 2018 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Burial at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Safe Harbor Assisted Living. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
