Alex W. Compton

COMPTON, Alex W., 85, of N. Chesterfield, Va., went to be with his heavenly father, to sing with the angels and play golf with his buddies on April 19, 2022. He was born in Halifax County on December 18, 1936. He leaves on this earthly home his loving wife, Patricia Smith Compton, after 64 years of marriage. He is survived by two wonderful children, Tamara Hope Compton and Clayton Alex Compton (Frances); and granddaughters, Samantha Compton-Newman, (Jason), Jessica Waters (Jeremy), Carolyn Ann Compton and Peggy Ann Ratliff (Bob). He loved spending time with his grandparents who lived on a farm and he enjoyed the freedom of country life.

At age 18, he joined the U.S. Navy and spent 23 years working on and flying in airplanes.

Because the Navy moved him from place to place, he made wonderful friends that still communicate with him. This gave him and Patricia the opportunity to see many places and he loved to travel with his wife to many of those places after he retired. They traveled to almost all the states in the U.S. as well as to Alaska, Hawaii and countries in Europe. Wherever Alex went, he made friends easily. He was quick to make a joke and often found himself the MC at Naval functions as well as church functions. With his rich bass voice, he enjoyed singing in church choirs and in quartets. Alex loved sports and played football and basketball and, as often as he could, he was on the golf course. A visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. with the memorial service starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at Beulah UMC, 6930 Hopkins Rd., Richmond, Va. 23234. Reception to follow. Interment will be held at a later date in North Fork Church Cemetery in Halifax Co. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Samaritan's Purse.
