Almar was my class mate at The Citadel in Mighty Mike. He was always laughing and happy. He was a true friend during those tough knob years. I still think of him often and he was gone too soon. My heart is still with his family- you raised a good human and he will always be missed.

I was a knob at the Citadel when Mr. Fitzgerald was a junior. Mr. Fitzgerald was already a great leader. He knew how to inspire and motivate us and was firm and tough, but never cruel or unkind. I was deployed later that year to Iraq with the Army and never saw him again, but I will never forget him. I think about him and our other departed brothers and sisters every day and will for the remainder of my life.

August 17, 2007
There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To Fitz's family,
He was and still is one of my best friends in the Marine Corps. We went through OCS together and for that 10 weeks I cannot remember a moment we were seperated. It may seem like a short time, but in that time we became brothers. Our friendship stemmed from our school rivalry. I am a 2005 graduate from VMI and we constantly harassed each other about whose school was better. But we had a mutual respect beyond words. If he was tasked with something I was by his side, if I was in trouble he was by my side. I can't even begin to tell you how much this has impacted me. As small as it may seem, I have been working through TBS trying to honor Fitz. Anything less than what he would expect of me is not acceptable. Regretfully we lost touch when he went to Iraq. I spoke to him several times just before he deployed but I was not able to get his contact information in Iraq. This hurts me more than anything words can tell. I consider Fitz one of my best friends, and to lose contact with him breaks my heart. He is everything I will strive to be in a Marine Corps officer. We fed off of each other's attidude and I will not let that go. His and your sacrifice was not in vain and myself and the rest of the armed services will continue to prove that. I love Fitz like a brother, please accept my deepest condolences.

When I first saw the picture of this handsome young man, I was imediately struck by how much he looked like his father; and like his father he joined the military; he was nicknamed "Fitz"; he made others laugh; was unselfish; and from all acounts was loved by all who knew him. This is indeed a very sad day indeed. There are no words that can truly console and ease the pain. I grieve for his family, friends and fellow soldiers. All of us wish we could hold the hands of time still for one more "moment" with our loved ones; but they are taken from us much too soon. I believe there are some things we will never understand this side of heaven-and this is one of them. I can only pray that God will help his family to celebrate his life, how he lived and commemorate his legacy for those that remain and those to come.

The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this trying time. Words are inadequate to express the humbleness and gratefulness we feel toward all who have consoled us during the passing of our loved one, 1st Lt Almar LaRon Fitzgerald. Your calls, emails, flowers, and prayers were warmly appreciated. We saw all of these as God’s love expressed through whatever you did, thank you very much. May God richly bless you is our daily prayer.
The family will hold a memorial service March 25, 2006 at 10 am at the Marine Reserve Center, 6000 Strathmore Road, Richmond, VA 23234. The center is located off I95 and RT 150 (DGSC Exit).
Following the service we will have fellowship with light refreshments.
Those wishing to make a donation may do so to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (Combat Casualty Assistance Campaign), their website is nmcrs.org.
A scholarship fund in honor of Almar has also been established. The scholarship will be rewarded annually to one Lexington High School student with the same aspirations as Almar. Almar majored in Criminal Justice at the Citadel. He became a commissioned officer after graduating in May of 2004. His plan was to serve as a Marine for three years before becoming an FBI agent.
If you are interested in contributing, memorials may be made to the Lexington County School District 1 Educational Foundation, for the Almar Fitzgerald scholarship, P.O. Box 1869, Lexington, SC 29071.
Thanks again and hope to see you on the 25th of March and please pass this on to whomever you think we might have missed or would be interested in attending the memorial service.

To the Fitzgerald family: I signed this guest book earlier, but as the days went by I read more and more about Almar. I cried and my heart was touched further, by the many wonderful things written about him. Mrs. Foster, I believe Almar knew you were there next to him and I believe he remembered the song you sang to him. I also read that 9 other people will be helped with Almar's donated organs. He is a hero and he will never be forgotten.

Dear Sharon,
I cannot imagine what you are going through. I feel my pain, sadness, anger, anguish. Almar was a beautiful man. He was a treasure, and he always will be in our hearts.
He left an indelible impression on me, like he did so many others. Almar was trusted immediately. He had a deep sense of maturity at a very young age. He had many challenges from the start, but he never stopped loving life.
I find it no coincidence that Almar was buried on my father's 3rd Yartzeit. (Yartzeit is the third anniversery, if you will, based on a lunar calender because Jews follow the lunar calender). My father taught me how to be a father, and how to care about others.
Roderick is like a son to me in my heart. I felt that way about him and related that way to him when I coached him. About two months ago a family came to my office for their 15 year old boy. He was proud of his brother off in Iraq who had survived a surprise ambush. I thought to myself, "does this family know how lucky they are?" And last Monday I was sitting in my office thinking about this family and wondering to myself when will it be that I know somebody who died in Iraq? When will this thing touch me with its darkness? Within hours Tradd was contacting me to ask me if I had heard about Almar.
One of my father's favorite stories was about the Lamed-Vovniks. My oldest brother Michael read this as part of my father's eulogy.
God has declared that he will let the world go on, that he will not destroy it if there are at any given time at least 36 righteous people on this earth. 36 people who can have compassion for human suffering and respond. Those 36 can be a banker, or a baker, or some one out lookng for work, or a cab drivers, or a physician, or a school teacher, rich or poor. These things matter less, what matters more is if the person can show compassion in the face of suffering and can relate to all human suffering. Only those who are Lamed Vovs do not know that they are so. As soon as you think that you are you are disqualified. And for the rest of us, it is our job to treat all people as if they are so.
Almar was Lamed Vov. A person of extraordinary character. A true star. He left this world with great integrity. He is a national treasure and he will forever be held in my heart for these things.
I hope to be able to visit you soon and I intend to be in touch with Rod about arranging this.
All of my love

My heart goes out to you all. Almar was a good friend of my brother, Matt Mayer. They were good friends all through high school and also graduated from the Citadel together. The one major thing i remember about Almar and the times he came over to our house was his unbelieveably infectious smile. He was just such a happy, friendly guy and i really enjoyed all the times i was around him, whether in Lexington or at the Citadel. He was an unbelieveable guy. This is an incredible loss in our lives, but an even bigger gain in Heaven. May God bring you peace in your heart knowing that he is watching over us all. You will not see me cry for I will mask my pain. I have to be strong for his family (which is mine as well) and let you know it was not in vain. He is in a better place right now where he will never have to study war again.
I know I was not supposed to but every Marine I have had the privilege to lead I end up caring far to much about. I definately tried to talk Almar out of Infantry (which is also my MOS) because his heart was even bigger than mine and that means it can be broken even easier. Infantry was a natural fit for him and he was DAMN GOOD!!! He was definately better than me when I was a Lt.
I look forward to seeing you all again. I wish it was under different circumstances but hopefully you understand why I volunteered to bring him home to you. If you are mad at the Marine Corps, Political Administration, or God I will be their for you to vent on.
Your son was special and he was in a special part of my heart that will never be filled by anyone else.
Semper Fidelis and see you soon. If you do not mind I would like to invite my parents and my pastor to the funeral. I will not do so unless I have your permission.
Very Respectfully,
Bobby Earl Danzie Jr.

To the Family of 2nd Lt. Almar L. Fitzgerald:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.
