Amos Andes Obituary

Amos James Andes, Jr.

Andes, Amos James, Jr., 96, of Richmond, VA, left us peacefully on October 11, 2024.

A devoted son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was throughout his long life a shining example of kindness to others and contagious cheerfulness. He never met a stranger.

Amos was born April 19, 1928, Fauquier County, Virginia, to Amos J. Andes, Sr. and Lelia Early Andes. He was brother to Ray, Edgar, Harold, and Kenneth and a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. Raised on the family dairy farm, Amos learned early the values of Christian faith, hard work for the good of self and others, and kindness to all.

Amos attended Bridgewater College where he met his future wife, Mary Kathleen Ogden. Settling in Lynchburg, Virginia, he was a school teacher and assistant principal before moving to Richmond in 1971. He retired in 1997 as a Deputy Clerk of the Richmond Circuit Court.

He leaves behind his daughter, Deborah Belt (Douglas), of Richmond; his son, Mark Andes (Virginia Beach, Virginia); grandchildren, Matthew Belt, Carrie Belt Rogers ( Joshua), Jennifer Belt Pfund (Michael); and great-grandchildren, Mia, Phoebe, Lilly, Miles, Andie, and Atlas.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Amos' life on Friday, November 1, at 2 p.m. at Westover Hills United Methodist Church, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to Westover Hills United Methodist Church, Richmond.

We know Amos through his son, Mark. It's sweet that someone mentioned a "True" Southern gentleman. Amos was certainly that. Tremendous wit, and loved life. We ate summer dinners together and had a great time. Amos came with a bottle of wine. Perfect Gentleman. Thanks Amos. Bless You!

Uncle Amos had a young heart. Infectious laughter and smile. He connected to everyone I ever saw him interact with. There are a few in every family that just connect. He was one.

I went up in '95 or '96 to stay with Granma Lillian overnight and Uncle Amos was there. He was always looking after Grandma, even though she was his step, she was definitely family.

Anyway, I don't think any of us slept much. Me in my 20's, Uncle Amos in his 60's and Grandma Lillian in her late 80's.

I don't even remember most of the conversations, but we laughed so hard it hurt. Like teenagers. That was him. Infectious smiles and laughter. And when he got Grandma going, she was laughing so hard, she was crying.

When Karen and I got together, whenever he saw us, he always grabbed my hand "How are you young man? Phillip. And who is this? How are you, Karen?" And always a hug for her.

He will be dearly missed.

Sending our love to the family from SW Virginia.

I used to work across the street from where he worked and he had connections with my office. Instead of mailing items back to my office, he would walk them over. He was a very personable man and we enjoyed working with him. A few of us attended his retirement party. I won´t forget him. RIP Mr. Andes.

We've known Amos for about 20 years. I always described him as a true Southern gentleman! One of the nicest people we've ever known . He will be greatly missed .
