I don't know what it was that launched Dad's interest in sailing - whether it was his fascination with the mothballed S.S. United States ocean liner whose fading red, white and blue funnels loomed over the Elizabeth River in sight of our grandmother's house, or his intense love of North Carolina's Outer Banks - but sailing became a fitting metaphor for the life he navigated through waters which, occasionally smooth, ofttimes roiled stormy. His gift of a summer term at Camp Morehead when I was 12 instilled his passion into me. Dad spent much of his early adulthood provisioning his sons with all our needs and a good education, even while piloting his family through the hopeless tempest of our mother's illness. After her departure, he looked after his mother-in-law as she languished through the same disease that would claim him in the end. All the while he maintained shipshape selflessness and dignity, ensuring the high standards he had for his family never saw threat. Betty blessed our lives beyond measure and gave Dad the opportunity to make his love of the water tangible as they cruised to an assortment of ports of call. His "office" - more a pilothouse than my former bedroom - showcased a collection of all things nautical including, notably, the seamanship certificate he earned in Annapolis confirming his abilities not only as a navigator of life but the sea itself. Dad, as you sail into the uncharted waters of eternity, may you have clear skies, a fair wind, and a star to steer by.

My sincere condolences are conveyed to Betty and the Daffron family for our loss. Bud and I had a special friendship which was cherished by both of us. He was a remarkable individual, filled with kindness, love of his family, and respect for his fellow man. He respectfully embraced his Catholic faith, and was very active in his church. He and I spent many afternoons sharing stories relating to work and family experiences, enjoying special foods, and a number of Kentucky refreshments which we both enjoyed. I have thanked God many times for allowing my path to cross his in life.
