Betty Lou Marshall Witten

1930 - 2022

WITTEN, Betty Lou Marshall, of Fredericksburg, Va., passed away peacefully November 30, 2022, with her daughter, Ann Keeling by her side.

She was born January 29, 1930, in Norfolk, Va., daughter of Charles Wilbur Marshall and Dorothy Drewrey Marshall. She was a graduate of Maury High School and attended Mary Washington College.

She married Henry Calvert Witten in 1950 and moved to Culpeper, Va. She was active in community affairs, a member of the Culpeper Garden Club and the Culpepper Methodist Church, where she was a soloist and member of the choir. She was awarded a Life Member of the Virginia Conference of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church in 1960. While in Culpeper, she served as Administrative Secretary for the Culpeper Memorial Hospital. In 1972, Henry and she moved to Richmond, Va. There, she worked for the Virginia Regional Medical Program and Virginia Dental Association.

At the time of her death, she was a member of the Herb Society of America and Daughters of the American Revolution - Old Dominion Chapter (past Chapter Officer), and Friends of the Smithsonian and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, Henry Calvert Witten; daughter, Mary Harriette Witten Wheatley; brothers, Charles Drewrey Marshall and Wilbur Dale Marshall.

To cherish her memory, she is survived by her daughter, Ann Keeling Witten Armstrong; son-in-law, David Bryan Wheatley; her brother, Robert Gayle Marshall; and sisters-in-law, Polly Thompson Marshall and Betty Trout Marshall; many loving nieces and nephews. She was the beloved Nannan to three granddaughters, Lindsey Marshall Wheatley Sites, Sumter Drewrey Armstrong Hennessey and Elizabeth Keeling Armstrong Kotowski; two grandsons, Robert Witten Armstrong and Matthew Witten Wheatley; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, Va., 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023.
