Bobby Long Obituary

LONG, Bobby McCrae, of Richmond, passed peacefully at home on August 23, 2022. Bobby was born October 18, 1939, in Columbia, S.C. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was stationed in Spain during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Bobby was a loyal employee of C.F. Sauer Co., retiring with 50 years of service there as an engineer.

Known by those he loved as Papa Bear, he was kind and gentle with a wry wit and smile and a joke or story at the ready. He loved and cherished his longtime home on Church Hill, his community and his family. Founding member of the Church Hill Porch Club, Bobby quietly wove himself into the fabric of his community.

He is survived by son, Charles Michael Long; daughters, Teresa "TC" Dixon Nuckols (Lewis) and Tambra Lynn Dixon; sons, John Allen Dixon (Jan) and James Russell Dixon (Cheryl); and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Shortt Long; father and mother, Luguy and Evelyn Long; and his son, William Bryan Long.

The family welcomes friends to a sunset Celebration of Life and reception at Libby Hill Park, Richmond, on Saturday, August 27, at 7 p.m.

We were so saddened to hear the news of Bobby´s passing. He, and his wife Shelby, were so warm and welcoming to us when we moved to Church Hill over 30 years ago. We spent many hours filled with laughter and conversation on his front porch. Though his front porch is now empty, it is filled with fond memories and will always be the Long´s house to us. Our condolences to the entire family.

Bobby was truly a kind and gentle soul. From HOTH to the Porch Club to the Non-House Tour, and the Jug Band, he was always around. He will be greatly missed by all of us here on the Hill and everywhere else.

He was a kind, humble, and gentle guy and my first friend on Church Hill. Drank many a cold one and sang many a song on his front porch. He was the soul of High on the Hog, Travel well, old pal.

When I moved to Franklin Street in the mid. 1980's I was fortunate to meet Bobby and Shelby, two beautiful people! We had lots of fun on the porch, at Poes , HOTH and just about anywhere! They were wonderful to Bootsie, me and my Girls. We are gonna miss the old "Gamecock" and his great smile!

Bobby and I didn't work directly with each other at The C.F. Sauer Company, but our paths crossed on many occassions. He was always a kind gentleman with an easy smile. He was the kind of person that made me feel better about the day after just saying "hello, good morning." My condolences to his loved one on your loss.
