Charles Boyles Obituary

Charles Oliver Boyles

August 27, 1936 - July 17, 2025

Charles Oliver Boyles "Chuck" passed away on July 17, 2025, in Richmond, VA, just short of his 89th birthday. Born in Morgantown, WV, he was the son of Clarence Rae and Lottie Pursglove Boyles.

He was a high school basketball star in Frederick, MD, and was recruited by the University of Richmond on a basketball scholarship. While at Richmond, he was a proud member of Phi Gamma Delta, graduating in 1959. He continued his education at the T.C. Williams School of Law, earning his law degree in 1962. Chuck served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army for ten years, including time stationed in Korea. He retired as a Captain.

Chuck practiced law for over six decades. Much of his legal career was spent in partnership with his brother-in-law, the late John Lefebvre Gayle.

A lifelong Scout, Chuck earned his Eagle in 1952 and remained deeply involved in Scouting throughout his life. He led more than a dozen high adventure expeditions, including 50-mile hikes on the Appalachian Trail and 185-mile cycling treks along the C&O Canal Towpath.

Chuck completed one marathon, having started five.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Roberta deJarnette Gayle Boyles; and their four children, Charles "Chip" (Gokce), Bryan (Lisa), Charlotte (Michael), and Jonathan (James); as well as daughter-in-law, Debbie Haley. Affectionately known as "Boompa," he is also survived by 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Chuck was interred in a family service at Riverview Cemetery. The American flag was folded and presented to Roberta by two of their sons, both Eagle Scouts.

A celebration of life service will be held at Westminster Canterbury Richmond on Monday, August 11, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heart of Virginia Council's Camp and High Adventure Scholarship Endowment Fund, 8090 Villa Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23228, in honor of Chuck's enduring commitment to Scouting and youth leadership.
