Charles Caravati Obituary

Charles Martin Caravati, Jr.

May 9, 1937 - June 5, 2025

Caravati, Charles Martin Jr. MD, died peacefully at his home with his family June 5, 2025. Charlie was born May 9, 1937, in Richmond, Va., to Dr. Charles Martin Caravati, Sr. and Mary Virginia Dore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Virginia Mason Love, his stepmother. He is survived by his best friend and much loved wife, Betty Noland Caravati; their three children, Charles Martin III (Ivy), Elizabeth Caravati Butler (Ted), Nancy Caravati Jordan (Jay); and 10 grandchildren.

After graduating from St. Christopher's School in 1955, he continued his education at the University of Virginia, graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1959 and the School of Medicine in 1963. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, IMP Society, the Thirteen Society, TILKA, and Phi Kappa Sigma. He was an honored member of the Seven Society.

Charlie valued education all of his life, having served on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, as well as the boards of St. Christopher's School and Fredericksburg Academy. Charlie was a passionate board member and chairman of ChildFund International. A long-time member of the American Medical Association, Charlie also served as head of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and served on the boards of the UVA Medical School Foundation and MCV Foundation.

Charlie founded Dermatology Associates of Virginia in 1969. He continued to practice dermatology until 2000. That year, he was awarded the Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award by the UVA School of Medicine. He loved connecting with his patients and dedicated his career to helping others.

Charlie was an avid hunter, fisherman, and proud member of the Dove Association, the Hole in the Wall Club, and The Friendly Tavern and Bird Hunters Association. He was a life-time member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church from its inception and a devoted attendee of the Monastery at the Sisters of the Visitation. Charlie was always committed to giving back to his community and supporting those in need.

Above all, his biggest passion was bringing his family together. Nothing made PopPop happier than being with his grandchildren, Charlie, Sid, Thomas, Noland, Katy, Gib, Carson, Mason (Banks), Caroline, and John at a UVA tailgate, the farm, or the beach. His absence will certainly be felt at those big family reunions he loved so much…

We were truly blessed to have him as a husband, father, and grandfather. His love and spirit will continue to influence all of our lives.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Martin Caravati, Jr. will be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 12, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ChildFund International, P.O. Box 1911, Merrifield, VA 22116.

He was a wonderful caring Doctor and I was one of his patients for many years. I knew him from the CCV where I worked for 45 years. I am so sorry for his family at the loss of their wonderful father, husband and grandfather.

I will miss his bike rides with Betty in the morning at the beach, followed by talking about life over coffee at the Yacht Club.

I remember Dr. Caravati very well. He treated our youngest child for several bouts of an allergic rash. He was a very kind person and took his time explaining things to me. I'm sure he has.left many fond memories with his patients. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Dr Charlie was a favorite of my family. He took his time and used his sense of humor to relax my children who had warts that had to be frozen. He even went beyond and above to treat my daughter who had a spider bite. Kept in constant touch to check on her recovery. He was a great man ! So sorry for your loss. The world needs more people like Dr Charlie

Charlie was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I had the pleasure of knowing him for over 30 years, and spent many awesome days hunting doves together during that time. His friendly and positive demeanor made those "quiet" dove hunting days enjoyable. I will truly miss him (and his whitefish spread).
