Charles Johnson Obituary

JOHNSON, Charles "Chuck" R., of Dinwiddie, Va., passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023. He was born September 15, 1937 to the late Benjamin Floyd Johnson and Dorothy Webb Johnson and was preceded in death by his son, Charles R. "CJ" Johnson Jr., two brothers, J. Rodney Johnson and Earl G. Johnson. Chuck graduated from John Marshall High School and numerous technical and electronic schools. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant and was called back to active duty in 1961 for the Berlin Crisis. After returning, he then began his career working on airplane electronics at Byrd Airport, later owning a radio and TV store in Highland Springs and then, on to own several Southern Autotronics stores throughout Virginia and North Carolina. He built Airport Center in Dinwiddie County and started many successful businesses including Suburban Auto Sales & Body, Johnson Motor Sales, Inc. and CAC Finance, Inc. Chuck served on the Dinwiddie Industrial Development Authority for over 20 years. One of his favorite times in life was forming CJ Johnson Motorsports and watching his son, CJ, race at Southside Speedway, Langley Speedway, among other tracks. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Richmond and was a quiet Christian giving to many in need throughout his life. Chuck is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ann Hargrave Johnson; daughters, Terry J. Barba (Jeff), Amy J. Moose (Mark) and Wendy J. Barton; his twin brother, Carl W. Johnson (Douglas) and F. Wayne Johnson (Joanne); seven grandchildren, Charles R. "Trey" Johnson III, Todd Allen, John Allen, Heather Cappetta, Ashleigh Gallo, Aaron Barton and Sam Barton; fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to his devoted caretakers, Yvonne, Tracee, Teresa, Josey, Karen and Patty; also to our special friends, James and SueAnn Fitts and Kenny and Diane Droddy. Their daily support has been immeasurable. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Rd., North Dinwiddie, Va. 23803. Burial will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, South Prince George, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105 or Crater Community Hospice, Inc., 3916 South Crater Rd., Petersburg, Va. 23805.
