Charles Kalman Obituary

KALMAN, Charles, 95, of Richmond, passed away on April 25, 2023. Charles was born and raised in Richmond, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School. He was a lifelong member of Temple Beth-El where his father was among the initial congregants. Like his brothers before and after him Charles was a veteran; serving four years in the U.S. Navy as a Torpedoman's Mate 2nd Class aboard the submarine USS Trout (SS-556) based in New London, Conn. A resident of Church Hill for nearly 50 years, Charles restored a half-dozen homes, doing much of the work himself. He enjoyed giving tours of his house and talking about the history of his neighborhood. Charles was a very talented commercial artist, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Richmond Professional Institute where he later served as an Associate Professor after RPI became Virginia Commonwealth University. He went on to establish Kalman Trademark Advertising, which he operated for over 30 years. He designed advertising campaigns, marketing materials and especially trademarks for a wide range of businesses, from small local concerns to national corporations. His family delighted in the fanciful characters with which he embellished birthday cards and presents. He was preceded in death by his father, Meyer Kalman; and his mother, Dossie, to whom he was a most devoted son, taking special care of her throughout her life; as well as his brothers, Reeven, Raymond, Daniel, Malcolm and Sam; and two sisters-in law. He is survived by his best friend for the past 27 years, Reggie Levet; three sisters-in-law, nine nieces and nephews and 10 grandnieces and nephews; all of whom loved him and who he in turn loved very much. He was excited about the pending arrival of his first great-grandniece or nephew. Traveling with Reggie he saw much of the world, and he particularly enjoyed travels to visit with his family. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 27 at Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn. For those unable to attend a livestream is available at Blileys.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth-El, the Richmond SPCA or the charity of your choice.
