Charles Shewbridge Obituary

SHEWBRIDGE, Charles W., III, 78, of Blowing Rock, N.C., passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Born March 1, 1943 in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy Shewbridge.

"Chuck" was a retired BellSouth financial executive, where he started the tax department and ran it for 18 years. He was a leader in the tax and accounting field throughout his career and served on the Board of Directors for The Tax Executive Institute for three years, including serving as President from 1999 to 2000.

In social circles, Chuck was known as the "Southern Gentleman" for his quiet, gentle and kind ways. Chuck had a love of the water that he learned from his parents, and in his younger years he and his wife, Joanne, "Jo" and their three sons spent their weekends on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. He was also an avid golfer.

Chuck was preceeded in death by his brother, Steven. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joanne G. Shewbridge; his sons, Chip and Michael; and stepson, Tony; four grandchildren; and his siblings, Carol, Ken, Connie and Doug.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Bridget Catholic Church in Richmond, Va. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in his memory at:

No one was luckier than I to have met, married and spend 44 years with Chuck. Because of his hard work and enormous talent in his field we led a full and glorious life. He left behind a wealth of family for me and ensured that I would never be alone. He was rare sweet and kind and I miss him every single day.

AWE.........You ALL must be devastated. I haven't seen your brother in over 55 years, but I'm extremely saddened to know that he has passed. Chuck was my 1st date. It was at my dorky catillion dance. I'm sure his parents made him go. We did not say more than 5 words to each other the entire evening. Not uncomfortable for Chuck I imagine, but being the daughter of Charlie Langhorne, silence was not in our genes. I was so anxious that he was having an awful time. As always, Chuck looked so handsome & I'm sure I was the envy of all of the catillion girls.
For most of my youth, December 26th meant that our family would be having turkey sandwiches at the Shewbridges. I don't eat a white bread, turkey & mayonnaise sandwich that I don't think of the Awesome Shewbridges. I miss ALL of them terribly.

We only knew Chuck and Jo a short period of time however his quiet, gentle, sweet personality was seen all the time. We truly enjoyed their company and will miss his smile and gentlemen ways. All our love and prayers go out to Jo, their sons and family. Cheryl and Guy Kennedy
