Diane Wright Obituary

Diane (Ziggy) Wright

August 8, 1941 - April 13, 2025

Diane Wright, a resident at Westminster Canterbury Richmond (WCR), died on April 13th, 2025 at the age of 83 due to the complications of several strokes. She was the daughter of Don and Marie Zeigler and grew up in Elmhurst, a Chicago suburb. Ziggy (as she was universally known) is survived by her husband George Wright III, and by step-sons: George Wright IV of New Canaan CT, Robert Randolph Parrish Wright of North Salem, NY, Cary Page Wright of Richmond and their seven children.

After graduating from Drake University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta, she lived for several years in Los Angeles; and in 1970 she moved to New York City and a job as a legal secretary. In 1972 she met George and they married in 1976.

In 2011 she retired after over thirty years as a paralegal with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where she was the only non-attorney drafting wills and trust agreements, her sole job. In addition to her legal career, she assisted her husband in the formation of his NYC firm engaged in the then new technology of bar coding. At the same time, he also retired, handing off the business to his sons. They sold their Manhattan brownstone townhouse and moved to Richmond, his hometown and where he had established a regional production operation and warehouse of his firm.

Despite having lived only in three of the largest metropolitan areas of the country, Ziggy quickly and easily adjusted to Richmond and the WCR retirement community. And it just as quickly adopted her.

She loved the game of Bridge and played at every opportunity social and duplicate. She was a "movie buff", seeing practically every current movie in theaters and hundreds of those from the past on cable TV and streaming. But her greatest love was travel and the list of countries she visited totaled over 130. But she didn't just skim the highlights of a country on her visits; instead they were frequent and often lengthy. One visit was seldom sufficient and she visited the UK, China, India, Russia, South Africa, South America and most Western European countries multiple times.

In NYC she had been a member of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Natural History and was a frequent visitor at their exhibits and lectures. She continued her Met membership for her frequent return NYC visits; and she also joined the VMFA, Valentine, and the Woman's Club in Richmond. Through her husband, she became a member of the Country Club of Virginia.

In her late seventies, she suffered both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes that prevented future travel. She also had to sell her beloved BMW convertible; but soon replaced it with one with a topless electric wheelchair.

She would like to thank the outstanding staff on the third floor of the Parsons Health Center at Westminster Canterbury for their many years of dedicated and compassionate care.

Private funeral services will be at the Wright family plot in Hollywood Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the WCR Foundation, 1600 Westbrook Ave, Richmond, Va 23227 or to a charity of choice.

I was lucky to have had Ziggy as my duplicate partner at WC for several years after her first stroke. She was a much better bridge player than I was, but she made sure I was included in her large circle of friends. God bless you Ziggy.
