Dolores Carroll Obituary

CARROLL, Dolores "Dolly" Kirkpatrick, 78, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Sunday, July 16, 2023, while surrounded by her family. Dolly devoted her life to loving God, her husband, children, grandchildren, friends, and church communities. She was preceded in death by her son, John. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, John "Jack" F. Carroll III; and their two daughters; Stephanie (Brian) Bowe and their children, Emily (Camm) Johnson, Katie, and Caroline; Mary Kate (Ben) Hester and their children, Noah, Lindsey, and Lily Grace; her daughter-in-law, Maria (John) and their children, Hallie (Nathan) Rockwell, Hannah, Meg (Cam) Bonsell, and Jack. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Barry Kirkpatrick (Marilyn); and many dearly loved nephews and nieces on both sides of the family.

Dolly was born June 21, 1945, in Arlington, Virginia, the daughter of Lester Hobart Kirkpatrick and Rena Andriello Kirkpatrick. Naturally curious, Dolly loved all opportunities to learn, especially about science and history, and delighted in being a Girl Scout throughout high school. While attending the University of Richmond, she met her husband, Jack, in a Comparative Anatomy class, and they married in 1966. During her children's school years in Bon Air, she was well known for her leadership, caring heart, and encouraging presence. She enjoyed serving as PTA president, Girl Scout troop leader, and Bon Air Pool Clerk of the Course. Dolly's Christian faith was a vital part of her life. She loved to mentor women, which blossomed into a weekly Bible study in her home, and she served as a Christian counselor and teacher at the Christian Counselor's Training Center. For the past fifteen years, she led and taught groups of women at Wellspring Bible Study at West End Presbyterian Church. Dolly and Jack also hosted a Bible study in their home for many years and loved welcoming University of Richmond college students into their group.

Dolly and Jack led an active life together loving their children and grandchildren, faithfully cheering for them in their varied pursuits and passions, rain or shine. They treasured time with family and friends at their vacation home on Bavon Beach and enjoyed their many travels together to Acadia National Park and abroad.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 31, at West End Presbyterian Church (9008 Quioccasin Road). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, at the University of Richmond's Cannon Memorial Chapel. The livestream of the service and parking information are available at www.blileys.com/obituaries. The interment will be private for her family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West End Presbyterian Church- Deacon's Fund.

Dear Jack and all the Carroll Family:
It was only today, November 20th, that I learned of Dolly´s passing when the U of R Alumni magazine arrived at my Indiana home. Reading the notice filled me with a great sense of loss. I was privileged to be one of Dolly´s roommates for our sophomore year at Westhampton College. Having been a town student my freshman year, Dolly took me under her wing when my family moved out of state and truly mothered me through the big transition to living in a dorm and having to be on my own for the first time. Even then she was wise beyond her years - ever thoughtful, measured, and caring. It was a joy to reconnect with her while planning for our 50th reunion. Please accept my deepest sympathy, and know that I will be keeping her and all of you in my prayers.

Dolly was one of the most beautiful individuals I have ever known. We were friends in Martinsville, Virginia. Dolly was beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside. A wonderful Christian who was always sharing her faith with everyone she met. She has a beautiful place in heaven.

My best girlfriend of 35 years. I'll never forget her selflessness. She influenced me in so many ways, especially her unwavering faith in God, her devotion to family and friends, and her everpresent helpful and loving disposition. Missing her already.
