Donald Just Obituary

Donald Ray Just-beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend-passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025. A creative force with a preternatural talent for wielding the written word, Don left his mark on everyone he met. He'll be remembered for his kindness, his wit, and his passion for teaching.

Don was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on December 23, 1946, and grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. After earning his MBA from the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business, Don began an impressive career that spanned banking, advertising, hospitality, and academia. He was executive vice president and chief banking officer at the Bank of Virginia before pivoting to advertising, ultimately becoming president and CEO of the Martin Agency in 1982. He went on to found his own creative firm, Just Partners. Don and his wife, Lauri, owned and operated the Tranquil House Inn and its gourmet restaurant, 1587, in Manteo, North Carolina, before permanently returning to Virginia. In 2005, he joined VCU's Brandcenter to develop and lead the Creative Brand Management concentration. He adored teaching and was known for his uncanny ability to bring out the best in his students.

Don leaves behind his wife Lauri, five sons, Robbin, Steven, Keith, Chris and Donnie, and six grandchildren. Services will be private. The family requests that those wishing to honor Don's memory make a donation in his name to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Earlier today

My fond memories date back to his early career in banking. A gregarious friend and leader who surrounded himself with talent who became lifelong friends of many of us. Don loved life and lived it in those early banking days when I knew him best. I have fond memories .

Yesterday

Don was an incredibly talented mind and helped many he taught and partnered with to realize great knowledge, growth and success. I was partner with him throughout his life for 54 years and and so blessed to have been his "wing commander". He is no longer in pain. Pain in my heart for not having him here but happiness in celebrating his life as he moves on to greener pastures. My condolences, thoughts and prayers for Lauri´s courageous determination to care for him 24/7 during his declining health. Love you brother
