Dorothy Horne Obituary

Dorothy Swan Horne

February 17, 1947 - August 27, 2024

Dorothy Swan Horne passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 27, 2024. Born February 17, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, "Duck" was the treasured only child of the late Dwight P. Swan and Lillian L. Swan. Having been reared in Richmond from an impressionable young age, she swiftly settled into being a lifelong Richmonder.

Duck graduated from Douglas Southall Freeman High School in 1965 and then attended the Etta Johnson School of Culture and Travel. Soon after, Duck was introduced to her beloved Jack on a blind date, exchanged vows in 1967 and have been married for fifty seven remarkable years.

Duck enthusiastically poured herself into the rearing of their two daughters, Cary and Randy while also expressing her innate artistic talents. She had an eye for rich colors and elevated "the everyday" to the extraordinary. Duck's membership in the Junior League of Richmond, Virginia Historical Society, The Tuckahoe Woman's Club and The Country Club of Virginia were additional sources of joy in her commitment to community involvement over the years.

As an "only", Duck surrounded herself with a mosaic of endearing friends. Her "Thursday Lunch Group" was a rock in her weekly calendar. These loyal ladies embraced Duck's true authenticity, unapologetic humor and enriched her life beyond measure.

Duck is survived by her loving husband Jasper P. Horne, her two daughters Cary Horne Butcher (Guy), Randall Horne Cullen (Matthew) and adored her role as "Duckie" to her fabulous four grandchildren, Jack and Charlie Butcher, Katie and Jane Cullen. We would be remiss if we did not celebrate Elnora, Duck's friend and dedicated caregiver who cared for her and kept her laughing in a challenging chapter of her life.

A celebration of Duck's life will be held at The Country Club of Virginia, James River Clubhouse on Wednesday, September 4 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be private.

Duck and I became neighbors at 6 yrs. old for 3 years. We made the cheerleading team together in 8th grade, were in same sorority, and graduated from Freeman together. I loved Lillian and her fresh coconut cake. Duck and Nan threw fabulous sleepovers. Duck was loving, kind, so talented, and fun, really fun. I haven't seen her in 50 years, but the memories are forever, there is a hole in my heart today.
