Douglas Trabue Harmon, "Trae", age 54 passed peacefully at home on August 14 from pancreatic cancer and the complications of the disease. The diagnoses, made on April 14, 2023, was devastating to Trae and his family. He took on the battle with courage and strength. Earlier this year, Trae renewed his relationship with Christ and was re-baptized at Hope Church.
Trae was born on February 18, 1969 in Harrisonburg, VA. He was a devoted father, husband, brother and friend. Trae leaves behind a legacy of integrity, stability and love. Trae was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and took the values and ethics learned at Fork Union into Old Dominion University where he was a member of Sigma Nu. The brothers of Sigma Nu have been a steadfast force in Trae's life and were unwavering in their commitment to him and his family as he fought the disease. The tenants of Sigma Nu, Love, Truth, and Honor, were how Trae lived his life. Trae was an integral part of the landscape of so many friendship gatherings and celebrations. He had a love of the water and boating. When living in Dallas, Texas he joined a sailing team and later purchased a sailboat that he and Amy sailed together around the Chesapeake Bay.
When his son Matthew was born, Trae set out to instill those Sigma Nu values in him by living that life. Trae was a true partner in raising Matt. He read bedtime stories and told Matt he loved him every night. He took pride in coaching flag football and little league for Matt's teams. Trae had a strong love for his family and the importance of that connection. He lost his mother, Mary, when he was age 10 to Multiple Sclerosis. He was raised by his Nana and Dee (Lena and Doug Harmon) and his father, Larry, in Harrisonburg, VA. Understanding the impact of losing a parent, Trae was a volunteer at many Comfort Zone Camps. He reflected on these experiences often and had a great concern for his son, Matt.
Trae has been involved in specialty contracting for 20 years. He designed and sold commercial kitchen ventilation and fire suppression systems for years. Most recently, Trae was a project manager at Singer Equipment, a specialty company. In this position, Trae had his coworker's backs and was someone who could be relied upon to do what he said, abiding by those tenants of truth, love and honor.
Trae's "Love" was Amy. Married on April 19, 2003. Trae shared with Amy his passion for sailing and for traveling. The two of them had many great adventures together and later Matt joined in those great adventures.
Surviving Trae are his wife Amy, son Matthew, sister Carole (Darin), nephew Evan (Jessica) and great niece Lillia, chosen brother David. Trae is predeceased by his Mother Mary, Father Larry, Grandfather Doug, Grandmother Lena and Grandmother Carolyn.
In remembrance of Trae, a Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, September 9 at 11am at Hope Church, 12445 Patterson Ave, Richmond, VA 23238.
Trae's faith in Jesus Christ has taken him home as he looks upon us with Angel's wings, a glint in his eye as the wind carries him on.
In lieu of flowers, Trae requested donations be made to
Saint Jude Children's Hospital or Comfort Zone Camp.
