Edward Butterworth Obituary

Edward Goode Butterworth

August 21, 1946 - October 30, 2024

Edward Goode Butterworth, 78, (Ed, Mr.Ed) died October 30, 2024 from Chronic Heart Failure. He leaves cherished memories to his loving wife Davene (Nim) Butterworth; his children, Edward Hatcher Butterworth (Leslie) and Melissa Connelly Butterworth (Benjamin); his bonus sons, Christopher Winters and Andrew Winters; his grandchildren, Audrey and Hatcher Butterworth; and his bonus grandchildren, Kyle Webb and Gianna Caranante, along with other family members and friends.

Ed was born in Norfolk, VA in 1946 and in 1949 his family moved to Richmond. Eddie graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1964 and from St. Andrews College in Laurinberg, NC. in 1968. Upon graduating, Ed and his family moved to Woodbridge, VA where he taught Math for 3 years. In 1971, he and his family moved to Harrisonburg, VA where Ed taught high school Math and became the Head of the Math Department. In 1979, Ed and family moved to Richmond, VA where he worked for Johnson & Higgins Insurance Brokerage until J&H was bought by Marsh McLennon Companies in 1997. During his time at both companies, Ed performed actuarial duties and forcasted rates for Risk for many companies. He retired as a Senior Vice-President in 2014.

Not only was Ed a "human calculator", he was a natural athlete. Ed started bowling at age 8 and continued through high school, college and many years after. He was excited when he bowled a sanctioned 299, but was thrilled when he later bowled a non-sanctioned 300! Ed also played softball as a pitcher throughout his years and loved throwing his special pitch, "the church spinner". Ed loved playing tennis, and his children and grandchildren are outstanding in that sport. He enjoyed cutting out articles and stats from local newspapers regarding all his kids and grandkids then saving the cutouts for scrapbooks. Ed developed a love for running and ran 456 races, his favorite being the Half Marathon. Traveling, surf fishing and snow skiing were also loved. VT and JMU sports were always on our tv.

Mr. Ed was a man of many talents; besides sports, he was an artist, loved puzzles and crosswords but really adored playing bridge. He loved playing with partners Charlie and Jim, and all the people at Stonebridge.

Lastly, my Ed loved the outdoors and took pride in both his lawn, his garden and his fig tree. Ed would start seeds, plant, pick, and can his vegetables. Mr. Ed was amazing; he'll be missed by many.

Ed's Celebration of Life will be held at PCC Midlothian, 50 Old Otterdale Road, Midlothian 23113 on November 20, 2024. The service begins at 11 a.m. Please wear bright colors as we celebrate Ed's joyful life. At 12:30 p.m., a reception will be held at Salisbury Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the ASPCA or the charity of your choice.

I grew up with Ed, at Westhampton Elementary and Jr. High School, as well as Thomas Jefferson High School,in Richmond, Virginia. In the 3rd Grade, His Father passed away, and this was the first time any of us had known anyone to lose a Loved One. We were all really sorry for Him, and We Loved Him in a Special Way after That, for All of Our Lives! He was Always Loving, and Kind, and Friendly! Always! I can't Remember Him any other way! May GOD Bless His Family, Especially, at this Time of Loss, knowing that His Memory holds a Special Place in So Many People's Hearts, as well as Your Own! He is Rejoicing in HEAVEN, and We look forward to Seeing Him Again! AGAPE! SHALOM! Rev. Frank Leslie Bersch, Jr.

Nim, you and your entire family are in our prayers. We are so sorry for your loss. We met Ed at Stonebridge for bridge games. We so enjoyed his light hearted approach to the game and life. We will miss seeing him; but we know he is at peace with no pain anymore. And that is a blessing. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
