I adored Mrs. Baliff. As my middle school history teacher at Tuckahoe Middle School in the early to mid 1980's, she was a legend.
She held court at the front of the room, red lipstick and all. I can hear her accent today, forty years later. Her crackly voice was distinct. She was funny and fun--whip smart too. She engaged us in current events; the more we engaged in contrary opinions, the more animated she got--she loved the back and forth and so did we.
Mrs. Baliff brought her full self to the classroom every day, and invited the same from us--as young and foolish as we were. My brother said she was the first teacher that treated him like an adult. He said he appreciated that even if he didn't deserve it!
Mrs. Baliff played a formative role in my academic development, and I'm so grateful I was shaped by her.
Much love to her family as you grieve her passing and celebrate her life.

Mrs Baliff was my 8th grade History teacher (my father taught HS history so I was well versed in history). As a 54 yr old woman, I can still hear her voice teaching passionately (I am a teacher of 32 yrs). She was a person/teacher to aspire to be like. I vividly remember a new student moving into our class (he was an immigrant who escaped Iran in the middle of the night). She listened to his story and praised him on his family´s bravery. She was truly interested and engaged in his story and encouraged by example her students to be the same. As a high schooler my younger sister had Mrs Baliff, and every night at the dinner table was a Mrs Baliff story (told with imitating her gestures and voice in a truly loving and respectful way). My parents and I looked forward to the Mrs Baliff antidotes every evening. We still talk about them today. My sister had such admiration for Mrs Baliff (as did my whole family). I am grateful that she was able to spend her retirement years with family and able to engage even further into her faith with groups and an adult Bat Mitzvah. Condolences to all that knew and loved her. She truly left a stamp on me and my sister as her students BUT also as a passionate human being.

Ms. Baliff taught me in World History at Tuckahoe Middle School in the 80's. AND I had the pleasure of going to Europe with her. Our first trip (8th grade?) was cancelled for some reason so she took two classes the following year. That meant my sister got to go as well (she was a year below me). She got homesick on the trip so Ms. Baliff let her room with me. One morning we overslept on that trip and she let us have it! But we deserved that. She was an amazing teacher and guide in Europe- always keeping us on our toes. She was tough but fair with grading and her decisions. Most of all I remember how funny she was. And her great NY Accent. Oh how I loved her! She will be missed. She made a big impact on many lives, especially mine. Praying for her kids and grandkids. You all were such lights in her life.

Ms.Baliff you were an Amazing History teacher! You taught me in 8th grade at Tuckahoe Middle school in 1989. I went with you to Europe which was a trip of a lifetime! You also taught my husband and he went to Europe 2 years prior to me. We both think of you often and are so grateful for you and your passion for education. You will be missed but Not forgotten. Prayers to your family.

Elayne was a "fixture" at the MacDonalds on Patterson Avenue (Henrico County, VA) every Sunday morning starting about 1998 (and continues). We all knew of her love for teaching and heard of her many trips she took (even after retirement). She talked often of her family and her years in New York. We all want to let her family know that she is missed ... but never forgotten.
