Elizabeth Gayle "Betty" Jeter

age 93, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully January 10, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis Dejarnette Gayle and Elizabeth Clark Gayle; brother, Seth Gayle, III; first husband, Carroll Darlington Henley from Crozet; and her second husband, William Mason Jeter. She is survived by her three sons, Carroll Darlington Henley, Jr., Ellis Clark Henley (Cathy), and John Hoskins Henley; three grandchildren, John Hoskins Henley, III (Claire), Roselyn Elizabeth Henley "Roz" Massie (Scott); and Ellis Clark Henley, Jr.; as well as a great-grandchild, Nate Hoskins Massie. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended William & Mary College for two years and then left to get married and start her family. Later, despite having three boys aged 5, 9, and 11, she returned to school completing her degree in Business Education at Richmond Professional Institute (VCU) in short order. She then started her 25-year career as a beloved favorite teacher at Lee Davis High School. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a devoted member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, January 15 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, January 16 in the Chapel of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, 7046 Cold Harbor Rd, Mechanicsville, VA. Interment to follow in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
